Otis Kaye (ur); also signed Otis Kaye and inscribed One Dollar Bill Folded in Half with Stamps on the reverse Oil on panel 6 1/6 x 8 1/8 inches Provenance: Private collection, circa 1990-present Exhibited: Annville, Pennsylvania, Suzanne H. Arnold Art Gallery, Lebanon Valley College, Money, Art and the Art of Money, Sept. 2-Oct. 23, 2011 Best known for his images of American currency, Otis Kaye continued the trompe l'oeil tradition of William Harnett, John Haberle and John Frederick Peto into the twentieth century. Known for his technical virtuosity and inventive compositions, Kaye loved visual puns, creating many money pictures in the 1920s and 1930s that include humorous references to the economic and social eccentricities of the era. In this painting he inserted himself into the newsprint fragment, referencing the story of George Washington throwing a silver dollar (not in existence in Washington's day) across the Potomac.
