ATTRIBUTED TO WATANABE KAZAN (1793-1841): A SET OF SIX SCROLL PAINTINGS Attributed to Kazan Watanabe (1793-1841) Japan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Ink and watercolor on paper, with paper frames and mounted as hanging scrolls with bamboo handles. All with sealed and inscribed fitted wooden boxes ''Kazan o haiga'. 1. Depicting banana leaves and inscribed "A banana leaf, standing in the autumn windstorm, the sound of rain in a bucket, in the night", a poem composed and written by Watanabe Kazan. Sealed 'Kazan of Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841)'. 2. Depicting a wild pink flower and pampas-grass (Susuki or Ashi). Sealed 'Zenrakudo'. 3. A painting of a rooftop, inscribed "Clouds of flower blossoms, Ueno is over there, alas for my unlearned self!", the poem composed and inscribed by Watanabe Kazan. Sealed 'Zenrakudo'. Ueno is the area associated with excellence in art and learning where Tokyo University and Tokyo National Museum are located. The area is famous for cherry blossom viewing in spring at the Ueno Park. The painting possibly shows the roof-top of the main hall of Zojoji Temple. Sealed 'Zenrakudo'. 4. A painting of a swallow (tsubame) flying past willow trees. Sealed 'Zenrakudo'. 5. Depicting a grasshopper and inscribed "Although it believes it is hidden in the grass, you can see the grasshopper, Kaseki" – the poem composed and inscribed by Watanabe Kaseki (1852-1930), who studied under Watanabe Shoka (1835-1887), the second son of Watanabe Kazan. Sealed 'Zenrakudo', one of his artist's names. 6. A painting of a man seated, looking up at the moon, with a ceremonial festive broom and gourd beside him. Sealed 'Zenrakudo'. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, minimal staining, and some creases. Provenance: Family collection of either Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) or his son-in-law Louis (Loek) Borensztajn (1935-2021), Netherlands. Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was an architect, art collector, dealer, and founder of the first Museum of Japanese Art in the Middle East. He became one of the world's leading collectors of Japanese art, starting at the age of 18, and continued to collect and work as an art dealer in Berlin in the 1920s. In the 1930s Felix Tikotin fled from the Nazis and hid his collection in the Netherlands. After the war, he decided that his collection should be taken to Israel, where in 1959 and with the help of Abba Hushi, who was the mayor of Haifa, The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was established. The Museum's collection comprises more than 8,000 items of art and crafts. Dimensions: Image sizes 25 x 28 cm, Sizes incl. mounting 113.5 x 35.5 cm Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841), was a Japanese scholar and a noted painter. He studied painting to earn a living. In 1832 Watanabe, who was in the service of Lord Tawara of Mikawa, was sent to an important post at Edo (now Tokyo) and was put in charge of coastal defense for his province. His opposition to the stringent antiforeigner policy of the ruling Tokugawa shogunate, however, brought him great suffering and a long term of house arrest. Later, when his pupils planned to hold a benefit exhibition for him in Edo, he feared it would create turmoil that might draw attention to his family and to his lord, and he chose, therefore, to commit suicide. With a long inscription to the right with the signature KAZAN Gaishi ga (painted by Kazan the Recluse). SIZE 147 x 42 cm (image) and 207 x 64 cm (incl mounting) Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, creasing, and little soiling. Provenance: From a US private collection in New York. Watanabe Kazan was born Watanabe Sadayasu in Edo (Tokyo) to a poor samurai family, and his artistic talent was developed from an early age. His family served the lord of the Tahara Domain, located in present-day Aichi prefecture. Watanabe himself served the lord of Tahara as a senior counselor, one of his achievements being said to be protecting the domain from even a single death from starvation during the Tenpo famine. He was heavily influenced by the artistic styles of the West, forming a unique style with elements of Japanese and European art. On the one hand, he was a traditionalist Confucian, who believed in filial piety and loyalty to his daimyo, and on the other he was enthusiastic about Western ideas regarding science and politics. He wrote two private essays which were interpreted as being critical of the Shogunate's defense of Tokyo Bay and promoting Western ideas. Although these papers were discarded by Watanabe, they were found, and he was tried and exiled to his home province of Tahara. One of the conditions of his exile was that he wouldn't sell his paintings, however Watanabe continued selling his paintings in secret due to financial hardships. This was eventually discovered, leading to the suppression of his works and house arrest. Due to the political turmoil involved in this, Watanabe committed ritual suicide (seppuku) to amend for the embarrassment he caused his lord. With a wood storage box inscribed Watanabe Kazan shika no zu (Watanabe Kazan, picture of a deer) to the cover and with a long inscription and two seals to the interior of the cover.

The space opens up above a large lake (or a sea cove), reaching towards steep mountains in the distance. Sketch-like painting with impeccable brush work, on the upper right the character Nobori 登, one of the artist’s pseudonyms, and the seal mark KA-ZAN 華山 below. Kazan was a Nanga painter, an old Chinese painting style of the shanshui („mountain-water“) also displayed by the painting at hand. Mounting with silk, porcelain end knobs with floral blue-white decor. PAINTING SIZE 27,4 x 52,2 CM, SCROLL 107 x 62,2 CM From the German collection "Drei Kraniche" Note: Kazan was born into a small aristocratic family from Edo, risked everything by criticizing the Shogunate in one of his print works, and was thereafter sentenced to death in 1839. The box inscription by WATANABE Kaseki, Kazans son, which was written for a school in Todai, describes how Kazan was concerned about the shogunate's policies and his motivations and hopes for Japan were ruined when he was placed under house arrest in 1840. Condition: The scroll painting is in good condition with some traces of age and wear. The painting has folds and crease from long-term display. Due to the size and weight of the scroll, the lower section of the mounting displays tears and damages . Remounting is recommended since the mounting seems to date to the late Edo or Meiji period. The dimensions are 138 x 54.5 cm (length x width). WATANABE Kazan (1793-1841) Kazan was born as WATANABE Sadayasu, the son of an upper class samurai for the Tahara clan, a small clan now part of present-day Aichi prefecture, and developed his artistic talent from a young age. Kazan once had the opportunity to become the disciple of TANI Buncho and was able to improve his skills as an artist. However, due to his position in the clan, WATANABE Kazan was selected to become the Kar? (elder councilor) for the clan, which left little time for painting. During the 1830s, Kazan became a successful politician, implementing agricultural methods like using whale's oil as pesticide for rice and promoting the production of other grains. However, writings by Kazan that were seen as critical of the shogunate and promoting Western ideas were found in 1839, leading to his exile to Tahara, his home province. Kazan's disciple, FUKUDA Hanko, wanted to help him (since Kazan was living on the edge of poverty) and established an art salon to sell Kazan's paintings so that Kazan could use the money to buy food. The shogunate noticed the activity that was going on and placed Kazan under house arrest. Kazan felt this would further burden his clan and decided to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) in 1841. Kazan's adopted son, Shoka was not allowed to build a grave for Kazan and no grave existed until the fall of the shogunate in 1868. WATANABE Kazan was heavily influenced by Western art, creating his unique style with elements from both Japanese and European art. Kazan is famous for his polychrome, detailed work but is also known for his watercolor/sumi paintings with plenty of brushstrokes, each one containing some form of energy. The bamboo appears as if it is blowing in the wind and behind the many leaves, a sparrow flies through the bamboo. The piece is signed by Kazan with a short inscription that it was possibly painted for someone who was part of the salon created by FUKUDA Hanko or one of the other art groups that existed during Kazan’s lifetime. The box contains a matching inscription from circa 1912 by either a collector or an authenticator describing the style and the brushwork done on the painting and the style being consistent to that of Kazan's work. The scroll comes with a double box to protect the main box from further damage. Condition: The scroll is in good condition; it is slightly creased and displays signs of age throughout the mounting and painting. The only significant wear is on the makiginu, the silk covering used to cover the back section of the scroll. The dimensions are 194 x 44.7 cm (length x width). Condition: The scroll painting is in good condition with some traces of age and wear. The painting has folds and crease from long-term display. Due to the size and weight of the scroll, the lower section of the mounting displays tears and damages . Remounting is recommended since the mounting seems to date to the late Edo or Meiji period. The piece is signed by Kazan with a short inscription that it was possibly painted for someone who was part of the salon created by FUKUDA Hanko or one of the other art groups that existed during Kazan’s lifetime. The box contains a matching inscription from circa 1912 by either a collector or an authenticator describing the style and the brushwork done on the painting and the style being consistent to that of Kazan's work. The scroll comes with a double box to protect the main box from further damage. Condition: The scroll is in good condition; it is slightly creased and displays signs of age throughout the mounting and painting. The only significant wear is on the makiginu, the silk covering used to cover the back section of the scroll. The dimensions are 194 x 44.7 cm (length x width).
