    • Carson City Mint Letter on Letterhead to the Honorable R. P. Keating
      Dec. 08, 2018

Carson City Mint Letter on Letterhead to the Honorable R. P. Keating

      Est: $400 - $500

In 1865 William Garrard was appointed superintendent of the Mint in Carson City. Two days later President Cleveland lock the Mint doors. Garrard and other important Democrats relentlessly petitioned to have the mint open. Cleveland did allow them to unlock the back door (metaphorically speaking) and due a limited amount of assaying. In 1889 a Republican was elected President and the Mint produced coins for its last four years. So although the mint was not making coins, the letterhead clearly says, "The Mint of the United States at Carson, Nevada." So, it was a mint - sort of! This letter from 'The Mint of the United States at Carson, Nevada is letting Keating, superintendent of the Savage Mine, know that the Carson City Mint has just sent three gold bars by Wells Fargo. Signed by W. Thompson, Cashier. State: Nevada City: Carson City, Ormsby Date: HWAC# 99766
