      Mar. 22, 2019

      KEIBUN (1779-1843): FLOWERS AND BIRDS

      Est: €300 - €600

Ink and color on silk Japan, 19th century Impressive flowering plant placed in the foreground, the stem reaching dynamically upwards, sprouting like fingers sideway. The blossoms are delicate yellow and lean towards the lyrical. On the tall stem is a bird, the same kind also seen below. Both have black heads, yellow breast, wings and tail grey to black, presumably titmice or bunting, such as the Japanese yellow bunting nojiko, but a certain artistic freedom was certainly allowed, despite typical Shijo School realism. Matsumura Keibun was the younger brother of Goshun, who was a student of the renowned Maruyama Okyo, who then together later founded the famous Shijo School in Kyoto. Keibun and successors refined the style further. Signed Keibun 景 文 and red seal Keibun no In (seal of ...). Very good condition, Brocade mounting, ivory rollers, in casket. Dimensions: SCROLL SIZE 202 x 50 CM, IMAGE SIZE 113 x 37 CM Condition: Very good condition Provenance: Austrian-Japanese private collection
