Keimel was one of the charter members of the association; he was a native of Munich, and was a teacher at the Advanced School for German Painting Craft there. HERMANN KEIMEL (1889-1948) MUENCHNER / PLAKAT KUNST. 1931. 47x33 1/2 inches, 119 1/2x83 3/4 cm. Chromolitho Kunstanstalt, Munich. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges; restoration along horizontal fold. After studying art at the Munich Academy under Julius Diez and Angelo Jank, Keimel went on to become a teacher at the same institution. He was a member of the artistic group "The Twelve," and also of the new Munich Association of Poster Artists. He designed numerous commercial posters, generally employing a crisp Art Deco style. This poster is his masterpiece and remains an icon of poster self-promotion. To promote an exhibition of Munich poster art, Keimel plays a geometrical game and constructs a cubist face out of colored sheets of printing paper. One has to wonder if this establishment and the one promoted by Hohlwein (see PAI-XIX, 367) are one in the same. Both feature coffee and violin musical accompaniment by which to enjoy a quick pick-me-up. Chances are fairly high that it is the the Viennese coffeehouse located in Munich's main train station that both artists are advertising. But whereas the better known posterist peddles sophistication, Keimel zazzes things up a bit with a touch of Art Deco zip, injecting a caffeinated jolt into the proceedings rather than generating a "pinkies-up" to-do. Keimel taught at a painter's academy in Munich and he was a member of the group "The Twelve," as well as the New Society of Munich Posterists.
