    Sumiyoshi Keishu Japanese Painting On Silk

    (Japanese, 1729-1797), depicting samurai at ocean's edge, signed with red seal. Keishu lived in Edo and was a pupil of Hiromoni. He became a monk and took the name of Keishu. In 1773 he was appointed Goyo Eishi to Tokugawa Bakufu. This painting was purchased by Lt. Augustus Ludlow Case Jr. in 1877 and has remained in their family until 1982 when it became part of the Kent Collection. Doug, Wilson & Wheatley Edinburgh gallery label verso. Light soiling, stains, laid down on board, insect damage, losses, creases. 43" high, 44" wide.
