FINE AND RARE WILLIAM KEITH (SCOTTISH-AMERICAN, 1838-1911) YOSEMITE LANDSCAPE

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

FINE AND RARE WILLIAM KEITH (SCOTTISH-AMERICAN, 1838-1911) YOSEMITE LANDSCAPE, oil on canvas laid on panel, a dramatic high Sierra view of Yosemite Valley in the Tonalist style, Half Dome clearly visible, signed lower right, retaining two old Chicago, Illinois printed framer's labels verso. Housed in an early gilt frame with arched shape reflecting that of the subject matter. Reserve. Circa 1890. 27" x 31 1/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Scotland, William Keith (1838-1911) immigrated to the United States with his mother in 1850. After settling in New York City, he attended school for several years and then began apprentice work as an engraver, completing illustrations for publications such as Harper's Weekly. In 1859, he was offered a job as an illustrator / engraver in San Francisco, a move that changed the trajectory of his life and work fundamentally. In California, Keith met other influential artists and intellectuals, most notably John Muir, the iconic environmentalist and champion of all things Sierra Nevada. Muir and Keith, both native Scots of the same age, became fast friends and hiked throughout central and northern California frequently. Keith was aligned with Muir politically and ethically and helped to play an important part in the formation of Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Club. Keith's work was highly sought after in his lifetime, the artist having secured numerous commissions from railroad companies and wealthy patrons for large Western landscapes. Some of those patrons were Chicago elites, such as Daniel Burnham, a successful architect, who not only collected Keith's work but also became his de facto agent in the Midwest, attracting new clients for the California-based artist. Keith's San Francisco studio was destroyed in the 1906 Great Fire, and it is believed that he lost over 1,000 paintings in the inferno. Completely fresh to the market, the present landscape is a rare early Yosemite Valley view that survives in remarkably fine condition.

    William Keith (1838 - 1911) American/Scotland

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

William Keith (1838 - 1911) Oil on canvas, Signed Lower Right, Measures 18 x 22 and 24 x 28 inches w/frame. A native of Scotland, William Keith became in the late 19th and early 20th centuries a leading Northern-California landscape artist. In fact, he was so well known that he is referred to as the "Dean of California painters." His romanticized views of nature found much favor among the culturally aspiring citizens of San Francisco and hung in many foyers and dining rooms in their elegant homes. He completed thousands of paintings and drawings, and many of them were lost in his studio in the fire of 1906. His early works are dramatic mountainscapes in a realistic style adopted from the Dusseldorf School of Germany. The paintings of the last two decades of his life are looser and obviously influenced by his exposure in France to the Barbizon School of landscape painters, who were the first colony of painters to complete paintings "en plein air," or directly from nature rather than in studios.

William Keith (1838 - 1911) Oil on canvas, Signed Lower Right, Measures (18 x 22 inches) w/frame (24 x 28 inches) A native of Scotland, William Keith became in the late 19th and early 20th centuries a leading Northern-California landscape artist.
