ARTHUR IGNATIUS KELLER (1866-1924) Golf Talk. Illustration for unknown publication, circa early 1900s. Charcoal with fixative on stiff paper. 385x380 mm; 15x15 inches, on 15 3/4x15 1/2-inch sheet. Signed "A. Keller" in lower left image. Tabbed onto mount; nicely matted and framed. Provenance: Heritage Auctions, May 14-15, 2015, lot 71382; thence to Dick McDonough. An extremely adept, award-winning illustrator, Keller strove for " tone, simplicity, and easy harmony of color" in his work. These qualities are apparent in this tranquil composition, a snapshot of a younger and older golfer's moment of repose from a summer's game.

Keller was one of the most respected American book and magazine illustrators of the early twentieth century. His elegant work appeared in The Saturday Evening Post , The Ladies' Home Journal , McCall's , St. Nicholas , The Century , Scribner' , Collier's , Harper's Monthly , Life and many other periodicals. He was also a frequent contributor to the New York Sunday Herald . Perhaps the most famous book he illustrated was Owen Wister's best-selling western The Virginian (1902).
