        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

ERNST KELLER (1891-1968) AUSSTELLUNGEN WALTER GROPIUS. 1931. 50 1/2x36 inches, 128 1/4x91 1/2 cm. Alten Universitat, Heidelberg. Condition A- / B+: small tears and scuffing at edges; minor creases and abrasion at edges and in image; pencil writing on verso, showing through. Paper. "This poster uses the diagonal to attract the eye and to suggest dynamic activity. This was a common device by this time, but Ernst Keller's poster is entirely original in its control of space, masterly drawing and integration of text. The printing of the image is by letterpress from linocut blocks overprinted from type in opaque grey. The fingers gripping the handle of the trowel turn the hand into a fist, a commonplace symbol in political propaganda to suggest the acclamation and solidarity of a crowd" (Hollis, p. 52). Swiss Graphic Design p. 52, Muller-Brockmann 81, Plakat Kunst p. 114, Realismes 48, MoMA 337.1984.

Keller was one of the fathers of the international typographic style. He taught design and typography at Zürich''s Decorative Arts School, influencing generations of students from 1918 until his retirement in 1956. In addition to teaching, he also designed a number of posters for the Zürich Decorative Arts Museum. All of his posters adhered to his two graphic principles of simplicity and legibility. His style evolved over the years from a strict approach in the 1920s, to more relaxed and imaginative typography after the war, which ran contrary to the prevailing, rigid international style. Condition B+: restored loss in left margin, affecting image; restoration at edges; creases and abrasions in image. Framed. A key figure in Swiss graphic design and international typography, Ernst Keller taught at the Kunstgewerbe Schule in Zurich from 1918 until he retired in 1956, imparting his key tenets of simplicity and legibility to two generations of Swiss designers. Keller designed a version of this poster in 1926 (for an earlier exhibition), with the two primary colors inverted. Two years later, with the exhibition held in a different venue, he revamped the earlier design. Using bold, sans-serif typography he organized the space to provide impeccable legibility. This poster served as a model for many designers who continued to use the same system for decades. Müller-Brockmann no. 139 (var).

ERNST KELLER (1891-1968) EIN SCHÖNES BUCH MACHT FREUDE. 1948. 50x35 1/2 inches, 127x90 cm. City/Druck A.G., Zurich. Condition B+: tears and creases in margins and image; wrinkles at edges; tape on verso. Paper. Ernst Keller was one of the fathers of Swiss graphic design, teaching design and typography in Zurich's famous Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Applied Art) from 1918 until he retired in 1956. He designed many posters in the cultural field and they all adhered to his two graphic principles of simplicity and legibility. Keller instilled in his students the belief that "every piece of graphic design ought, over and above its immediate purpose, to be an improvement of our visual environment" (Willy Rotzler, Graphis 184, 1976.) His style evolved from a strict approach in the 1920s to a more relaxed one as seen here. It is a simple, yet sophisticated image of a girl reading; created using flat tones of color and no outlining, except for behind her hair. The focal point of the image is the girl's eye, which irresistibly draws the viewer to the poster. To accompany the straightforward design, the poster simply reads, "a good book makes you happy." 50 Years of Swiss Posters n. 17 p. 68.

50 1/4x35 3/4 inches. J.C. Muller, Zurich. Condition B+: tears and repaired tears through bottom margin affecting image; tape on verso. Paper. Keller is one of the fathers of the international typographic style. From 1918 until his retirement in 1956 he taught advertising at the Zurich School of Decorative Arts, were he had a great influence on at least two generations of designers. His program emphasized legibility and simplicity. He did several posters for the Museum of Zurich. Das Neue Heim (The New House) is a perfect example of his minimal yet highly efficient approach. This design was so pleasing to the artist that he used it twice, the first time was in 1926 for the same event. After more than 70 years it would still look perfectly modern today! ref: History of the Poster, by Joseph & Shizuko Muller-Brockmann, ABC Verlag Zurich, 1971.
