GOTTLIEB THEODORE KEMPF VON HARTENKAMPF (1871-1964) DAS IRRLICHT (WILL-O'-THE-WISP) signed l.r.: G.T.H. Kempf, oil on canvas 45cm by 39.4cm;17 1/2in by 15 1/2in Kempf attended the Academy in Vienna from 1886 to 1896 studying under J.V.Berger and L.K.Mueller. A significant figure in the turn-of-the-twentieth century Viennese art scene he showed with the Vienna Succession in 1899 and was also a member of the Siebener Club and Wiener Kunstlerhaus. The present work is a strong example of his work which assimilates the influence of the Succession and Art Nouveau with a strongly symbolist style of his own. He also excelled as an etcher and illustrator and is represented in numerous museum collections in Continental Europe.

The background shows a mountain range, which is indicated very subtly. The drawing is in good condition; however, the matt has slightly browned and foxed. The upper left corner shows a small stain and in the upper right corner are two small holes. The sheet is titled and dated lower right „Blick auf Achsain (…). 40“ (View of Achsain (…). 40)“. Verso shows the artist’s stamp and is titled as well. The dimensions are 36.5 x 27 cm (framed) and 26.5 x 16 cm (cut out). Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. The picklers signed and dated 'GvKempf 1913' (lower right) oil and pencil on panel 10 x 15 5/8 in. (25.4 x 39.8 cm.) Painted in 1913 PROVENANCE Dominion Gallery, Montreal, where purchased by the husband of the present owner. NOTES Gottlieb Kempf, as this artist is often referred to in short, attended the Akademie der Bildenden Knste in Vienna. Amongst his tutors were Julius Berger and Leopold Karl Mller under whom he developed in the academic tradition. Simultaneously, however, he learnt to etch tutored by the Austrian etcher William Unger. In 1899 Kempf worked as an illustrator for the Meggendorfer Bl„tter, a journal founded twelve years earlier by Lothar Meggendorfer to publish his writings and often satirical drawings. Kempf worked on a series titled the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Pictures and Allegories and Emblems. Also in 1899 he began showing works at the exhibitions of the Vienna Secession, continuing to do so until 1901. Kempf exhibited with various other groups in Vienna, including the Gesellschaft bildender Knstler Wiens, of which he became a member in 1902. The following year he established his own group of artists in Fahrafeld near B”heimkirchen including the artists Josef Jungwirth, Anton Karlinsky and Fritz Sch”npflug. Together they depicted scenes from daily life in Austria, Kempf returning to his painterly beginnings.
