Jacob van de Kerckhoven, called Jacopo da Castello Still life with boar's head, basket with thrushes, pheasants, cabbage, cauliflower, asparagus, wine bottles / Still life with hare, basket with woodcock and artichoke, pheasant, pigeons, birds, oysters and citrus fruits (counterparts) oil on canvas; framed 98 x 116 cm each signed on the painting with boar's head left of centre, on the small card: Al Sig. Animali reali e fantastici nell'arte europea dal Medioevo al primo Novecento, exhibition catalogue, Cagliari 2011, no. 77-78 The two excellent still lifes are made by the Antwerp master Jacob van de Kerckhoven, better known by his Italianated name Jacopo (or Giacomo) da Castello, after the district of Venice where he lived. The artist was a student of the famous still life and animal painter Jan Fyt (1611 – 1661) in Antwerp and lived in Venice from 1685, where he became court painter to the Doge. Evidence of his success in the lagoon city are also numerous mentions of his paintings in the large collections of the time (e.g. Savorgnan, Manfrin; cf. Cottino/D'Aliagno (ed.) 2011, no. 77). The affiliation of the paintings to this artist is undisputed not only by their excellent quality and stylistic features, but also by a trompe l'oeil card attached to the basket of the still life with a boar's head with the inscription: "Al Sig. Jacobus Vanden Kerckhoven / Pittor fiamengho / in Vinegia". This can also point to a practice common at the time, according to which the game and vegetables to be painted were physically handed over to the artist, so to speak as an "advance". Both compositions are presented in an unembellished interior. In the first painting, the game is neatly arranged on a diagonal stone step, in front of which a lying pheasant and a cauliflower lean optically towards the viewer. The second depiction is characterized by an elegant, more methodical composition, with the hare as the thematic and visual focal point.

POULTRY IN THE KITCHEN

      Est: -

This painting presents fauna themes, which no major picture gallery could do without in the 17th and 18th centuries. Poultry genres, showing live birds selected for culinary use, were among the particularly well executed works by Jacob van der Kerckohoven, the court painter of the doge of Venice in the 1660s. His works were sent to aristocratic collectors in Italy, England, and lands north of the Alps. Two chickens sit on a flat stone block on the right, a turkey stands opposite, and between them in a basket are two pairs of pigeons. Their culinary use is suggested by the heads of cabbage, two bottles of wine, and several pears. The harmonious arrangement and brilliant painting of the fowl are emblematic of the painter’s many years of experience with this theme.

      Est: €15,000 - €20,000

STILLLEBEN MIT ERLEGTEM WILD Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 115 x 160 cm. Gerahmt. Jahrhunderts in Venedig verbreiteten Malstils, erinnern wollen. (1031771) (21) Jacob van de Kerckhoven, ca. 1637 Antwerp - ca. 1712 Venice, attributed STILL LIFE WITH KILLED GAME Oil on canvas. Relined. 115 x 160 cm. Framed. In Antwerp Jacob van de Kerckhoven joined the circle around Jan Fyt (1611-1661) and soon became his most loyal follower, adopting his specific repertoire. At some point (the exact date is not known) Jacob van de Kerckhoven relocated to Venice, where he remained for the rest of his life. The oldest documents relating to him being there date from 1687. He appears in the register of the “Fraglia dei pittori“ brotherhood, the painter's guild of Venice. In Venice Jacob adopted the name “Giacomo da Castello“ and became a superior still-life painter of Venetian painting of the late-17th and early-18th century. Even though all his still lifes were excellent, he became especially famous for his hunting still lifes with slain animals lined up in the foreground against the backdrop of a forest landscape. The present large-format painting also falls within this category. His talent in the depiction of animals is clearly recognisable: the minutely painted feathers of the different birds and the hares' fur are details that can be found in almost all of his paintings. The game is depicted in a balanced composition with an objective view. Every detail is rendered in great detail. The artist applied unusually sombre colours in the present work (as can be seen in the two oval paintings with the same subject held at the Pinacoteca dell'Accademia dei Concordi in Rovigo), as if he deliberately wanted to recall the so called “Tenebrosi“, a popular painting style in Venice towards the end of the 17th century.

Jacob van Kerckhoven, called Giacomo da Castello, Still Life with Two White Doves CertificateAlberto Cottino, Turin 6.4.2002.Jacob van den Kreckhoven was born in Antwerp and was taught by Jan Fyt, but moved to Italy quite soon afterwards. The artist spent most of his life in Venice and lived in the Castello district, which earned him the sobriquet of Giacomo da Castello. However, not only his name, also his style is markedly Italian. He paints his still lifes in broad, quick brushstrokes and his motifs are usually drawn from the meat, fruit and vegetables of everyday meals. This painting, with the park or garden landscape hinted at in the background and the layered arrangement of the game, fruit and doves presents a typical example of this artist's sophisticated compositions. 76 x 61 cm
