      • JOSEPH FRANCIS KERNAN Reeling in a Swordfish.
        Dec. 14, 2023

JOSEPH FRANCIS KERNAN Reeling in a Swordfish.

        Est: $4,000 - $6,000

JOSEPH FRANCIS KERNAN Reeling in a Swordfish. Most likely advertisement illustration for beer, c. 1950. 533x311 mm; 21x12 1/4 inches. Oil on canvas, adhered to cardboard. Joseph Francis Kernan's work graced the covers and pages of nearly every major magazine, as well as advertisements and calendars produced between the 1920s and 1950s. His illustrations often featured what he called "the human side of outdoor sports, hunting, fishing and dogs." Being an outdoor sportsman himself, he was able to keenly produce accurate and detailed representations of these activities. These "masculine" subjects made him a favorite artist for beer advertisers including DB&M's Royal Bohemian Beer, Falstaff, and Burger Brewing Company. It is very likely that this illustration of three men swordfishing and enjoying beer together was one such advertisement.

Joseph Francis Kernan (American, 1878-1958) DB&M's Royal Bohemian Beer advertise

        Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Joseph Francis Kernan (American, 1878-1958) DB&M's Royal Bohemian Beer advertisement, circa 1940 Oil on canvas 30 x 24 inches (76.2 x 61.0 cm) Signed lower left: J.F. Kernan PROVENANCE: The artist; Private collection, Illinois, commissioned from the above. By descent to the present owner. LITERATURE: P. Clure, T. Dierckins, Naturally Brewed, Naturally Better: The Historic Breweries of Duluth & Superior, Duluth, Minnesota, 2018, p. 136, illustrated. Joseph Francis Kernan, a magazine illustrator for forty years during the Golden Age, was notable in his time as "the poor man's Norman Rockwell." Born in 1878 in Brookline, Massachusetts, Kernan paid for his studies in Boston at the Eric Pape School of Art, where he later taught for two years, by playing professional baseball. True to his own sporting interests, Kernan favored outdoor scenes of sports, fishing, hunting and dogs. Kernan's paintings appeared on the covers of magazines including Collier's, Liberty, The Saturday Evening Post, The Country Gentleman, Capper's Farmer, The Elks, Outdoor Life, and the Associated Sunday Magazines. His work was also commissioned for calendars and advertisers such as International Harvester, Fisk Tires and Pratt & Lambert Varnishes. His body of work has become so highly sought after, that Heritage Auctions recently established a new auction record for the artist, when Hunter's Luck, Falstaff Beer advertisement sold in 2021 for a staggering $150,000. Commissioned around 1940 for DB&M's Royal Bohemian Beer, the present work has resided in one family since its inception. The great-grandfather of the current owner, while in the printing business in Chicago, started a beer-advertising side business during the depression to generate additional income. At the time, he was a sitting member in the US House of Representatives, so he turned the management of the business over to his son, the current owner's grandfather, who had just graduated from Notre Dame in 1933. He commissioned both Joseph Kernan and Andrew Loomis to paint numerous works in the 1930s and 1940s, so the consignor's grandfather could travel to local breweries in the upper mid-west, and market these original works to the breweries. DB&M's Royal Bohemian Beer advertisement hung in the family's den throughout the 1950s and 1960s, before heading into family storage in 1971 where is has resided ever since, until being offered at auction today. JOSEPH F. KERNAN (1878-1958) "College Football." [SATURDAY EVENING POST / COVER ART / HEISMAN]

        Est: $25,000 - $35,000

JOSEPH F. KERNAN (1878-1958) "College Football." Cover of The Saturday Evening Post, published October 15, 1932. Oil on canvas. 686x547 mm; 27x21 1/2 inches. Signed "J.F. Kernan" in red paint, lower right. Attached to original stretcher and framed to 33x27 inches. Some areas of restoration. A tear sheet of the printed magazine cover accompanies the artwork. Provenance: American Illustrators Gallery, January 1992; thence to Dick McDonough. Kernan's iconic image of interwar college football. Joseph Francis Kernan was a master of nostalgic and humorous illustrations of middle-class America. His work graced the covers and pages of nearly every major magazine, as well as advertisements and calendars produced between the 1920s and 1940s. An outdoorsman and athlete who played professional baseball to help finance his art education and early career in commercial art, Kernan often incorporated sporting themes into his work with a keen sensitivity. He described his desire to capture 'the human side of outdoor sports, hunting, fishing and dogs.' This cover, one of twenty-six he would create for The Saturday Evening Post, became so popular that it was reproduced numerous times. Compared with this finished painting, the published cover silhouettes the players to allow for the magazine's graphic device of partially hiding the title to give the illustration a three-dimensional effect. It shows Kernan's signature farther to the left than he signed this canvas, which also contains full background imagery of a bright blue sky with clouds, a grassy playing field, and the hint of a cheering crowd in the far background. Many have noted the similarity between this image and the Heisman trophy, awarded annually to the most outstanding player in college football since 1934. It was likely the inspiration for Frank Eliscu, the sculptor who created that trophy two years later. Having appeared on the cover of a magazine with a circulation of over a million, he, like most Americans, would have been familiar with this image. In the cover and the trophy, the football is cradled in the player's left arm while he looks out towards his extended right arm and outstretched hand.
