Dmitri Kessel (1902 – 1995), Matisse in the Cathedral at Vence, 21 x 15 inch dye transfer print, 1950’s, printed 1980’s, This was a small church near Nice. Matisse designed the architecture, the stained glass windows and the tile mural. The ill artist worked on this for four years. Here he is posed between the mural and windows. Note: Description Updated 11/23. Men by the Yangtze River. B&W, c. 1946. Fiber-based silver gelatin. Older print. Framed. Group of men on the banks of the Yangtze River. Signed and inscribed in ink to Neil Leifer by photographer. 20 x 16in. This framed work has been professionally framed by Mr. Leifer's preferred framer. The frame is handsome, created in a simple, modern design much preferred by museums. The woods is a light, natural shade; the glazing is a UV plexiglass of the highest quality; the backing board is generally a sheet of foam core. Many framed items also include a white matte. Framed works will be sold as-is, in frame. It is the bidders responsibility to remove the print from the frame if they so desire. More information on the specific framing can be provided by the auction house upon request. The photographs in this auction have been examined by an expert, whose opinions pertaining to the age of the prints, the printing process, and the type of paper used, are included in the description of each photograph. Although Guernsey’s believes these descriptions to be accurate, interested buyers are urged to personally inspect the prints either at the public preview or by appointment with Guernsey’s. Dmitri Kessel 1902-1985, acclaimed Photo Journalist of Time Life Magazine. In WWII he rode with American Convoys covering landings, later art, nature and a special interest in China. These medals and orders include Spanish Morocco Order of Mehdauia which earned him the right to be called Excellency, this order in solid silver, in 1959 he received Order of Merit of the Italian people in solid 18KT gold and it is stamped .750. and one other. Also a name plate and a Pope John 1963 silver commemorative medal.

Vintage silver print 34 x 26,5 cm (13.4 x 10.4 in) Photographer's "LIFE PHOTO BY DIMITRI KESSEL" stamp and Life reproduction stamp on the reverse Dmitri Kessel was born in the Ukraine in 1902. At the age of 13, his father gave him his first camera. The owner of a sugar plantation thereby influenced his son's path in life profoundly. After escaping from Russia, Dmitri Kessel immigrated to America in 1923. During the course of his 60-year career, he worked as a war correspondent, industrial photographer and photo journalist for Life. Kessel was considered an adventurous photographer, frequently rising to new thematic challenges. Thus, he took photographs of World War II and the Greek Civil War, but also produced photo series about the Yangtze River in China and the South American Andes. He also created portraits of prominent personalities, for example Picasso and Stanley Kubrick. The present lot shows another portrait of a prominent personality, albeit one hiding behind a camera. Indeed, the image shows none less than Henri Cartier-Bresson, outfitted with a coat, hat and his Leica (M3 with Summarit 1,5/50mm) and pursuing his favourite activity: photography.
