      Duke Ellington Sipho Ketye (South African, 1943-2002). "Ndebele Ceremonial Dancing" watercolor, 1986. Signed and dated on lower right. Born in Soweto, South Africa, Duke Ketye is best known for genre paintings that depict the people and traditions of his culture. In this watercolor, Ketye presents a mesmerizing group of South African Ndebele dancers. Ketye's composition brings the dancers right up to the picture plane, so that the viewer can take in their colorful costumes as well as their kinetic steps and agile locomotion. A wonderful piece that is hand signed and dated at the lower left and set in an attractive frame under glass. Size of artwork: 27" L x 38.5" W (68.6 cm x 97.8 cm) Size of frame: 32" L x 43.5" W (81.3 cm x 110.5 cm) According to the National African Language Resource Center, "Ndebele dances, including isitshikitsha, imbube, mbaqanga, amantshomani and amabhiza, are very popular. ... The gumboot dance involves rhythmic footwork, clapping and boot-slapping, sometimes accompanied by vocalizations, which has been emulated in the 'step' phenomenon, popular on many American college campuses."
