Britain. Johannes van Keulen, Paskaart van't Canaal Engelandt Schotlandt en Yrland..., from Zee-Fakkel, 1698 (circa). Hand Color. This is the second of Johannes van Keulen's sea charts of the British Isles, which was designed for Zee-Fakkel. Oriented by two compass roses with north on the left, the map provides a detailed picture of the coastlines of the English Channel and Britain. The large title cartouche obscures much of the east coast of England and Scotland. The scene was probably etched by Jan Luyken who signed the title page of both of Van Keulen's atlases. It presents a quaint scene of a shepherd boy with his sheepdog and a picnic basket, surrounded by his sheep and goats in a lovely pastoral landscape. This is the second state with the plate number 11, but still includes the apocryphal sandbank Nieuwgeronde Droogte in the Atlantic which was removed in later examples. It appeared in both the Zee-Fakkel and in the Zee-Atlas from about 1704 onwards. The second state of this map is very scarce and rarely appears on the market.

There is a good bit of topographical detail and plenty of place names along the coasts. Rhumb lines, two compass roses, a sailing ship, and a sea monster decorate the sea. North is oriented to the bottom of the sheet. At bottom right there is a distance scale cartouche featuring a river god and a figure playing a harp atop a sea beast. The decorative title cartouche at left features a female figure with an ax and wildlife.

Two compass roses orient this stunning chart with north to the right. It covers the western portion of the Gulf of Mexico, stretching from the panhandle of Florida around to the Yucatan peninsula. Van Keulen's chart was mostly derived from an exceedingly rare chart by Hessel Gerritsz, c. 1631. Of note, the panhandle of Florida lacks any familiar form and the Baja de Spirito Sancto represents the mouth of the Mississippi River. An inset at lower left shows the seaport of Vera Cruz and the island Fort of San Juan d'Ulloa. The chart was engraved by the eminent geographer and mathematician Claes Janszon Vooght. It originally appeared in Johannes van Keulen's fourth volume of the Zee-Fakkel in 1684. This is the third of four states with shoals added off the coasts of Florida and the Yucatan peninsula.

Inland detail is confined to topography, and there are numerous place names, safe anchorages and navigational hazards depicted along the coastlines. Three large insets show enlarged detail of the coasts around Saint Cruz (now Horta) on Fayal, Vila Franca do Campo on Sao Miguel, and Angra on Terciera, with a bird's-eye plan of Angra and additional navigational information. Five putti hold the drape-style title cartouche aloft, and two more putti are engaged in fishing atop the scale of miles cartouche. Several compass roses and a sea battle between two galleons further adorn the chart.

This uncommon chart is believed to be the first sea chart of the eastern portion of the Gulf of Mexico, and shows Florida's gulf coast from Pensacola to Cape Florida, with the western part of Cuba. The cartography is based in part on Hessel Gerritsz' chart circa 1631, and nearly all the place names on the chart are Spanish. The chart is oriented with north to the left, with a bit of the Yucatan Peninsula shown at lower right. Three insets depict the Cuban harbors: Matanzas Bay, Havana Harbor and Hondo Bay. The elaborate cartouche is flanked by Neptune, god of the sea, and one of the wind gods. This is the third state, with the plate number "15" added at bottom right and left, and a shoal added off the Yucatan peninsula.

Fine early chart of the Bay of Biscay depicting the coasts of southern England and Ireland, the western coast of France, and the northern coast of Spain. The chart identifies anchorages, soundings, shoals, and numerous place names along the coasts. In addition to a title cartouche flanked by cherubs, the chart is also embellished with two sailing vessels and a compass rose orienting north to the left. Drawn under the direction of Johannes Van Keulen (1635-1689), a famous Dutch chartmaker and seller, working in Amsterdam in the mid-seventeenth century. This chart is quite rare - we have only seen one other example of this map on the market in the last 30 years and one other example held in a public library.

This is the second of Johannes van Keulen's sea charts of the British Isles, which was designed for "Zee-Fakkel". Oriented by two compass roses with north on the left, the map provides a detailed picture of the coastlines of the English Channel and Britain. The large title cartouche obscures much of the east coast of England and Scotland. The scene was probably etched by Jan Luyken who signed the title page of both of Van Keulen's atlases. It presents a quaint scene of a shepherd boy with his sheepdog and a picnic basket, surrounded by his sheep and goats in a lovely pastoral landscape. This is the second state with the plate number 11, but still includes the apocryphal sandbank "Nieuwgeronde Droogte" in the Atlantic which was removed in later examples. It appeared in both the "Zee-Fakkel" and in the "Zee-Atlas" from about 1704 onwards. The second state of this map is very scarce and rarely appears on the market.
