Bernard Keyes O/C (1898-1973) Waterside Landscape

      Est: $250 - $500

Bernard Keyes (1898-1973). Oil on canvas, signed B.M. Keyes. "Boats at Low Tide in Truro Harbor" Cape Cod Massachusetts born Bernard Keyes was a graduate of both the prestigious Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum School. At the Fogg, Keyes was awarded the Paige traveling scholarship for 1921-1922. Upon his return to the States, Keyes took up a teaching position at the MFA, much like his mentor Frank Benson did years earlier. Benson had retired in 1913 and had moved from figurative Impressionism to sporting images, a shift the younger artist followed. Besides focusing on Impressionist derived sporting art, Keyes continued to teach moving onto Harvard University from 1938 to the 1960's. His work would eventually find its' way into numerous institutional New England collections, including the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, MA; Mt. Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA; the Holyoke Library, MA; Tufts University, Medford, MA; and Brown University, Providence, RI. In my painting, Keyes reveals the influence of the great Frank Benson in both style and subject matter. The brushwork is soft and loose, almost iridescent in its suggestion of the early morning glow. The calm mood is ably contrasted with the outline of the central figure against the sky. The painting at one time had an exhibition label on it, which implied that the artist thought it best representative of his work at that time it was done. Overall Size: 25 1/4 x 22 in. Sight Size: 21 1/4 x 17 1/2 in. #4362 Location J1
