            Est: £5,000 - £7,000

BHUPEN KHAKHAR (1934-2003) "UNTITLED" SIGNED BOTTOM RIGHT, WATERCOLOUR ON PAPER Size: 17.5 x 12 inches Provenance: Private Collection Paris Footnotes: Bhupen Khakhar, a self-taught artist born on March 10, 1934, in Bombay, embarked on his artistic journey after qualifying as a chartered accountant. Relocating to Baroda in 1962, he joined the Art Criticism course at the Faculty of Fine Arts, initiating his foray into painting. Engaging with the groundbreaking Narrative-Figurative movement, Khakhar's work exuded a distinctive irreverence, unfazed by his lack of formal training. His early artistic endeavours incorporated ready-made images of deities sourced from popular oleographs, skillfully collaged and painted over, sometimes adorned with graffiti. Khakhar's exploration extended to 'degenerate' forms of art, navigating the crossroads of classical miniatures and European illusionism. Marked by deliberate naivete, his 1970s paintings revealed a profound sympathy for ordinary individuals ensnared in existential conundrums.Transitioning into the 1980s, Khakhar fearlessly introduced homoerotic themes, often featuring self-referential figures. His artistic evolution embraced spatial arrangements of greater complexity, departing from the blown-up-picture-postcard style. Khakhar's keen observation of everyday life enabled him to capture 'typical' characters, rendering their bodies with a unique pliancy that underscored vulnerability and invisibility.Khakhar's artistic odyssey included solo exhibitions in major cities worldwide, showcasing his evocative narratives. He participated in numerous group exhibitions, leaving an indelible mark on the global art landscape, including significant events like the Biennale de Sao Paulo, Tate Gallery in London, and Documenta IX in Kassel. His legacy endures as a testament to his fearless exploration of unconventional themes and his unique contribution to the realm of contemporary Indian art.

Born in 1934, Khakhar embarked on his artistic journey relatively late, at the age of 38. Initially a practicing chartered accountant, he later pursued art criticism at the M.S. University in Baroda, commencing his career as an artist by crafting collages from calendar art. Reflecting on his artistic evolution, Khakhar expressed, "I was interested in the expressionistic style, which had no wit and humour. Now I am more involved in wit, painting people, and the environment around me." Khakhar gained international recognition as an artist long before achieving recognition in India, primarily through the assistance of British artist Howard Hodgkin, who organized his solo exhibition in the late 1970s. British artist David Hockney also influenced Khakhar's work, which initially revolved around the mundane existence of the "insignificant man" in everyday life. Collaborating with contemporaries in Baroda like Gulammohammed Sheikh, Khakhar synthesized traditional Indian art elements with contemporary themes, forging a distinctive visual language. His exploration of homosexuality is prominently featured in works such as 'You Can't Please All' and 'Two Men in Benares,' leading writer and painter Timothy Hyman to dub him "possibly the most provocative painter in contemporary Indian art." Khakhar himself explained, "I have chosen homo-eroticism as a theme because I am gay. What is happening in India – social rejection – did happen once in countries like the USA and Europe. The police in all societies have beaten up gays and lesbians. But now they have been accepted by society. For me, there is nothing unnatural about homosexuality." Critics noted that during his homoerotic phase, Khakhar's observations as a chronicler of ordinary life took a backseat. In contrast, his later works are more assured and settled than those from his 'gay period.' "I feel much lighter now. My personal tensions have been resolved. At 64, you no longer have the feeling that you will never die. One leaves the ambition to become a great painter and accepts whatever one is," he reflected. His later canvases explored landscapes in Kerala, Tamilian dhabas (roadside hotels), and the religious iconography of daily life in India. Khakhar's paintings adorn various public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and numerous private collections. His works have been exhibited globally, and posthumous exhibitions have showcased his artistry, cementing his legacy as a trailblazing artist. Bhupen Khakhar was posthumously awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1984. He passed away in 2003.
