Häufig greift er auf Ereignisse der Antike oder dem Mittelalter zurück und gilt damit als Erneuerer der Historienmalerei und als grosser Illustrator historischer Katastrophen. So archaisch wie seine Motive sind auch die Materialien, die er verwendet. Neben dem dominierenden Blei finden sich Asche, Stroh, Sonnenblumen, Sand, Ton oder verbranntes Holz, die in überlagernden Schichten aufgetragen werden. Immer wieder bilden Fotografien die Grundlage, aus der er die Kompositionen entwickelt. Die verwendete Farbpalette bewegt sich meist in Grautönen (Grau sei die Farbe des Zweifels), wird aber immer wieder von Braun-, Blau- und Gelbtönen durchbrochen. Das hier angebotenen Werk basiert auf dem ägyptischen Mythos von Osiris. Osiris wurde von seinem Bruder Seth zerstückelt und über das ganze Land verstreut. Die Schwester und Ehefrau Isis suchte die Stücke und setze Osiris danach wieder zusammen. Für Kiefer steht dieser alte Mythos der Erneuerung und Regeneration auch für den heutigen Umgang mit der Kernkraft. Die Katastrophe von Tschernobyl hat den Künstler nachhaltig geprägt, er versuchte damit metaphorisch die Sinnhaftigkeit der Kunst, Schöpfung, Zerstörung, Materie und somit auch der Körperlichkeit zu thematisieren. Man sieht eine reduzierte Darstellung eines grabartigen Metallkastens, am Boden ist ausgetrocknete Erde zu erkennen. Drähte mit Metallfragmenten beleben den Bildraum, fast scheint es, als würden die Betrachtenden in die Szene hineingesogen. Es entstanden mehrere Arbeiten zu diesem Thema, das grossformatige Hauptwerk befindet sich im San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Alle Werke dieser Gruppe gehören zu Kiefers eindrücklichen Arbeiten, die durch ihre einzigartige Ästhetik bestechen und denen man sich fast nicht entziehen kann. Anselm Kiefer's oeuvre is strongly characterised by themes from German history and culture. He often draws on events from antiquity or the Middle Ages and is thus regarded as an innovator of history painting and a great illustrator of historical catastrophes. The materials he used are as archaic as his motifs. In addition to the dominant lead, he also used ash, straw, sunflowers, sand, clay or burnt wood, applied in superimposed layers. Photographs repeatedly form the basis from which he develops his compositions. The colour palette used is mostly in shades of grey (grey being the colour of doubt), but is often interspersed with shades of brown, blue and yellow. The work offered here is based on the Egyptian myth of Osiris. Osiris was dismembered by his brother Seth and scattered all over the land. His sister and wife Isis searched for the pieces and then reassembled Osiris. For Kiefer, this ancient myth of renewal and regeneration also symbolises today's approach to nuclear power. The Chernobyl disaster had a lasting impact on the artist, who used it as a metaphor for the significance of art, creation, destruction, matter and, by extension, physicality. We see a reduced representation of a grave-like metal box, with dried-out earth visible at the bottom. Wires with metal fragments animate the pictorial space; it is almost as if the viewer is being sucked into the scene. Several works were created on this theme, the large-format main work is in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. All of the works in this group are among Kiefer's most impressive works, which captivate with their unique aesthetic and are almost impossible to resist. Lot Essay Born on March 8, 1945, in Donaueschingen, Germany, just months before the conclusion of World War II, Anselm Kiefer is best known for his powerful and thought-provoking works influenced by post-war German culture. Kiefer's artistic practice engages head-on with the aftermath of the War and Germany’s complex history and mythology, through painting, sculpture, installation and mixed media compositions. His large-scale artworks often evoke wasteland landscapes - complete with layers of natural materials - or empty architectural interiors. He also employs unusual mediums like lead to create large books, referencing the literary and political heritage of his homeland, as well as the heavy and poisonous nature of the material. Kiefer created a number of works in the late 1980s - including the present lot - referencing the mythological figure of Berenice, notably a sculptural work in the collection of the Guggenheim Bilbao made of lead, glass, photographs, and hair, in the form of an airplane wing and fuselage on the ground. The legend of Berenice dates to the third century BC, in which Berenice, the Princess of Cyrene (now Libya) offers a lock of her hair to secure the safe return of her husband. The hair rises to the night sky and forms a new constellation. In Kiefer’s mixed media work here, a female figure stands nude with limbs spread out in a kind of offering or exaltation, with the constellation whirling above her in a collaged photograph. Ashes and other materials have been applied to the work, lending to a feeling of sacrifice and solemnity. Employing ancient stories of loss and rebirth, Kiefer relates mythology to modern history while also contemplating his own contemporary world.

German painter and sculptor attached to Neo-expressionism, he is one of the most well-known and controversial post-World War II German artists. His work, initially inspired by Georg Baselitz, presents a violent brushstroke and an almost monochrome range with a mixture of materials such as wire, clay, ash and even waste. Thematically, his paintings show the influence of his teacher Joseph Beuys due to the strong presence of cosmological, mythical and historical subjects.
