Assemblage (fox head, mirror, resin, curved metal frame and zinc barometer on galvanised steel. Mounted on plywood plate. Verso with hanging device. - Signed and dated (incised). - Slightly dusty, some signs of ageing, on verso traces of studio work in places, overall very good. - Provenance: From the collection of the artist's assistant. - Unique. - Kienholz's installations and sculptural assemblages are controversial, unavoidably direct and always critical. Better known as tableaux, they provocatively denounce explosive issues in US society. In large format and constructed from everyday objects, found objects from flea markets and rubbish from junkyards and landfills, they deal with everyday American life, with discrimination, superficiality and double standards as well as taboo subjects such as war, grievances and exploitation. They seem brutal, conveying an inescapable coolness due to the materials used. Our "sly fox" succumbs to his own inner self, is exposed as such by a glance in the mirror. Like a striking depiction, it is meant to shake things up. It is a deeper, more abysmal fact of the American soul that Kienholz consistently carries out in his work. "Adrenaline-soaked anger has driven me through my work." (Ed Kienholz, art-in.de, 2.6.23). Signiert, datiert, nummeriert und mit dem Fingerabdruck des Künstlers. - In äußersten Kanten kaum sichtbar gegilbt, in Ecken kaum merklich bestoßen, unten links sehr oberflächliche Kratzspur, insgesamt sehr gut. Ausgezeichneter, farblich fein nuancierter Druck, oben und unten mit Rand. Das zweite der 2 seltenen Exemplare der Vorzugsauflage, die an Familienmitglieder und Freunde des Künstlers verteilt wurden. Ursprünglich sind insgesamt 100 Abzüge vorgesehen gewesen, von denen außer den ersten beiden die weiteren jedoch nicht realisiert wurden. Colour offset lithograph on wove paper. Signed, dated, numbered and with the artist's finger print. - Hardly yellowed in outermost edges,harldy bumped in corners, very light surface sratch on lower left, all in all very good. Superb, finely nuanced impression with margin at top and bottom. - The second of the 2 rare copies of the special edition which were distributed to family members and friends of the artist. Originally a total of 100 prints were planned of which, apart from the first two, the others were not realised.

Ausgezeichneter, farblich fein nuancierter Druck, oben und unten mit Rand. Das erste der 2 seltenen Exemplare der Vorzugsauflage, die an Familienmitglieder und Freunde des Künstlers verteilt wurden. Ursprünglich sind insgesamt 100 Abzüge vorgesehen gewesen, von denen außer den ersten beiden die weiteren jedoch nicht realisiert wurden. Colour offset lithograph on wove paper. Signed, dated, numbered and with the artist's finger print. - Hardly yellowed in outermost edges, hardly unfresh in righ outer edge, very few very light crease marks on upper right, all in all very good. Superb, finely nuanced impression with margin at top and bottom. - The first of the 2 rare copies of the special edition which were distributed to family members and friends of the artist. Originally a total of 100 prints were planned of which, apart from the first two, the others were not realised.

Provenienz: Aus der Sammlung des Assistenten des Künstlers. - Unikatär. - In den späten 1950er Jahren erlangt Kienholz in der Kunstszene von Los Angeles große Bekanntheit. Er gründet 1957 zusammen mit Walter Hopps die Ferus Gallery, die innerhalb kürzester Zeit zum Epizentrum der Avantgardekunst in der Stadt wird. Bereits 1958 verlässt er die Galerie, um seine eigene künstlerische Laufbahn voranzutreiben. Ab den 1960er Jahren ist er vermehrt in Hope, Idaho und arbeitet ab 1972 an all seinen Werken mit seiner Frau Nancy zusammen. Es ist der Beginn einer langen Arbeitsbeziehung zwischen beiden, die sein ganzes Leben andauern wird. Gemeinsam wählen sie kontroverse, brisante Themen, keine Tabus scheuend. In unseren "War flowers" gedenken sie einer traurigen Erinnerung gleich einem Gefallenen, die stacheligen Drahtblüten als vielschichtig aufgeladenes Zeichen dieser. Object. Overall good. - Provenance: From the collection of the artist's assistant. - Unique. - In the late 1950s, Kienholz achieved great prominence in the Los Angeles art scene. In 1957, together with Walter Hopps, he founded the Ferus Gallery which within a very short time became the epicentre of avant-garde art in the city. He left the gallery as early as 1958 to pursue his own artistic career. From the 1960s onwards he is increasingly in Hope, Idaho, and from 1972 onwards he collaborates on all his works with his wife Nancy. It is the beginning of a long working relationship between the two that will last his entire life. Together they choose controversial, explosive subjects, sparing no taboos. In our "War flowers" they commemorate a sad memory like a fallen man, the spiky wire flowers as a multi-layered, charged sign of this.

Provenienz: Aus der Sammlung des Assistenten des Künstlers. - Unikatär. - Kienholz' Installationen und skulpturale Assemblagen sind kontrovers, unumgänglich direkt und stets kritisch. Besser bekannt als Tableaux, prangern sie auf provokante Weise brisante Themen der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft an. Großformatig angelegt und aus alltäglichen Gegenständen, Fundstücken von Trödelmärkten und Abfällen von Schrotthalden und Mülldeponien konstruiert, behandeln sie den amerikanischen Alltag, diesem nahe stehend Diskriminierung, Oberflächlichkeit und Doppelmoral, ebenso Tabuthemen wie Krieg, Missstände und Ausbeutung. Sie wirken brutal, vermitteln qua der verwendeten Materialien eine unausweichliche Kühle. Unser "sly fox" erliegt seinem eigenen Inneren, wird durch einen Blick in den Spiegel als Schlitzohr enttarnt. Einer plakativen Darstellung gleich, soll er aufrütteln. Es ist ein tieferliegender, abgründiger Sachverhalt der amerikanischen Seele, den Kienholz in seinem Werk konsequent herausarbeitet. "Adrenalingetränkter Zorn hat mich durch meine Arbeit getrieben" (zit. Nach Ed Kienholz, art-in.de, 2.6.23). Assemblage (fox head, mirror, resin, curved metal frame and zinc barometer on galvanised steel. Mounted on plywood plate. Verso with hanging device. - Signed and dated (incised). - Slightly dusty, some signs of ageing, on verso traces of studio work in places, overall very good. - Provenance: From the collection of the artist's assistant. - Unique. - Kienholz's installations and sculptural assemblages are controversial, unavoidably direct and always critical. Better known as tableaux, they provocatively denounce explosive issues in US society. In large format and constructed from everyday objects, found objects from flea markets and rubbish from junkyards and landfills, they deal with everyday American life, with discrimination, superficiality and double standards as well as taboo subjects such as war, grievances and exploitation. They seem brutal, conveying an inescapable coolness due to the materials used. Our "sly fox" succumbs to his own inner self, is exposed as such by a glance in the mirror. Like a striking depiction, it is meant to shake things up. It is a deeper, more abysmal fact of the American soul that Kienholz consistently carries out in his work.
