Maurice Chevalier / Edith Piaf: Two Hand-Signed Prints. ca. 1974.

        Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: CHARLES KIFFER (1902-1992) SIZE: Each: 21 5/8 x 29 7/8 in./55 x 76 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Kiffer’s two most popular posters employ bold solid backgrounds to let the stars shine: Edith Piaf strikes a typically forlorn pose while belting out one of her raspy romantic songs, while Maurice Chevalier flashes his toothy whites beneath his beloved and famous hat. Kiffer captures them both so well because he worked closely with each; he created several designs for Piaf, and for Chevalier, he prepared virtually all of his publicity for some forty years. Leave it to those who know best to create the greatest homage. These are hand-signed from an edition of 150 copies. (Contemporary; Music)

Bedos, Paris DESCRIPTION: In addition to his singular work for Chevalier, it should be noted that Kiffer recorded much of Paris' music-hall history over a 40-year career. Here is a lovely portrait of the American dancer Ana Ricarda. Born into elegant aristocracy, she became a great choreographer and dancer during the mid-20th century, particularly within the tradition of classical Spanish ballet. The Spectator wrote of her ballet in 1954, "most beautifully conceived and performed, a simple tale told with great clarity and economy. One is left with the feeling that Ana Ricarda knew exactly what she wanted to do." This poster is hand-signed. (Modern; Dance; Music)

While not the height of his career, the early 1960s gave the singer eight major films, including "Can-Can" with Frank Sinatra. He was well-known enough that only the iconic image of his yellow straw hat was necessary to let the average passerby know that Chevalier was performing. (Modern; Theatre; Music)

Kiffer spent his entire career designing posters for the Parisian Music Hall world. For a long time, Maurice Chevalier employed him exclusively to design his posters, but Kiffer also created images for Marcel Marceau and other performers. Folies Bergere 97.

        Feb. 24, 2019

        Chevalier. 1935.

        Est: $1,000 - $1,200

ARTIST: CHARLES KIFFER (1902-1992) SIZE: 14 1/4 x 23 3/8 in./36.3 x 59.4 cm PRINTER: Imp. Bedos, Paris DESCRIPTION: In 1935, Chevalier had just starred in the American musical comedy "Folies Bergère de Paris," which he claimed was his own favorite of his films—until a billing dispute occurred with MGM. Frustrated, he left Hollywood to return to his Parisian music-hall career, and would not star in another movie for 20 years. Here, Kiffer has depicted the performer winsomely sauntering back towards Europe, as ever joined by his band of devotees in the trademark boater hats. (Film; Music; Art Deco)

        Ana Ricarda.

        Est: $1,700 - $2,000

Artist: CHARLES KIFFER (1902-1992) Size: 39 1/8 x 59 1/4 in./99.4 x 150.6 cm Imp. Bedos, Paris In addition to his singular work for Chevalier, it should be noted that Kiffer recorded much of Paris's music-hall history over a 40-year career. One is left with the feeling that Ana Ricarda knew exactly what she wanted to do." Hand-signed. (Entertainment)
