      This original oil painting by Sidney E. King depicts General George Washington’s 1781 headquarters in Yorktown, Virginia. The background of this painting is comprised of tents that General Washington employed as part of his Army’s Headquarters. Washington is featured in the middle ground surrounded by his generals. The camp, located in Yorktown, was centered behind the American and French lines. Sidney E. King (1906-2004), an American artist, was a renowned muralist revered for his extremely detailed paintings of historical scenes. Hired by the National Park Service to first paint signs, he later gained notoriety in his depiction of American history. He is responsible for painting nearly 200 historic murals; many of which are on display at U.S. National Parks throughout the nation.

Original frame. Probably a commission for the 250th anniversary of the 1607 founding of Jamestown, possibly one of the 40 by King that were on view at the celebration.
