      Sidney Kingsley American, 1906-1995 Martha Graham in Lamentation Signed Sidney Kingsley and dated 58 at the lower edge Brass and plaster with faux bronze patina Height 24 1/4 inches (61.6 cm) Provenance: Donated by Sidney Kingsley and Madge Evans for the Actors Fund Benefit Auction held at Sotheby Parke-Bernet, New York, Apr. 2, 1972 Sotheby's, New York, Dec. 9, 1998, lot 223 Acquired from the above by the widow of the artist Exhibited: Washington, D.C., The White House, Oct. 14, 1976 This sculpture was created by Sidney Kingsley for Martha Graham's opening performance of Clytemnestra. The premiere of this performance was held on April 1, 1958 at the Adelphi Theater in New York. On October 14, 1976 the sculpture was displayed at a White House dinner at which President Gerald R. Ford presented Martha Graham with the Medal of Freedom.
