He left London in 1970 to teach at Bath Academy, and his work began to reflect his more rural existence. He saw his own work as being figurative, not in the 19th Century sense of realism or naturalism, but as based on observation of the subject. Kinley died in September 1988.

Kinley was born in Vienna in 1926. He was Jewish and his family were forced to flee the country following the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in March 1938. Reaching France, where his parents were interned, Kinley was sent to England and fostered by a Catholic family. He served in the British Army from 1944-8, before pursuing an education in art first at Düsseldorf Academy and then at St Martins School of Art, 1949-53. Enjoying early success, Kinley held a one-man show at Gimpel Fils in 1954. Created a few years later, this early work is a dynamic example of the post-war abstraction of the figurative. Using both brush and palette knife, Kinley renders the reclining figure with flesh-pink tones and minimalistic shape, offset only by the rich background created from layers of blacks and greys. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot. § Peter Kinley (British, 1926-1988) Small House with Two Gables oil on canvas h:77 w:91 cm Provenance: Anne Berthoud Gallery, London, where acquired by the present owner in 1986 Other Notes: 'Small House with Two Gables' was painted in 1979-80 and is one of several paintings Kinley produced between 1971 and 1981 as a direct response to his experience of living in the English countryside. The gabled house has been identified as the Wiltshire home of Kinley's friend, Charles Ewart. The art historian, Marco Livingstone, has suggested that the painting's gold background 'produces a strong sensation of traversing a landscape' and there reflects the physical experience of a long walk in the country (Catherine Kinley and Marco Livingstone, Peter Kinley, Farnham 2010, p.101) . 'Small House with Two Gables' represents an abstract style of painting which Kinley adopted in 1965. Before this, he had mainly been influenced by the works of the French painter, illustrator and textile artist, Nicolas de Stael (1914-1955). Another version of the painting, 'Large House with Two Gables', 1980, is at The Tate Gallery, London.
