Note: Alberta Kinsey was born on a small farm in Ohio and attended a rural one-room schoolhouse before training at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1918, she moved to New Orleans and quickly developed a deep fondness for the French Quarter, despite the fact that it was considered a less than desirable neighborhood for a woman living alone in the early twentieth century. Renting an apartment and studio in the Old Governor Claiborne Home at 628 Toulouse Street, Kinsey hosted the first meeting of the Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans and found herself at the center of the burgeoning artistic community in the city. Her love of the historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and plant-filled courtyards inspired her to depict many scenes of French Quarter daily life. She has said of her early years in the city: I didnt have a great talent or the genius for it, but I did have the desire. A painter and illustrator, Alberta Kinsey was an art instructor at the University of Ohio in Lebanon. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and was a member of the Cincinnati Women's Art Club. She then moved to New Orleans, where she worked with Ellsworth Woodward and lived in the French Quarter for more than thirty years. It is said that she inspired the development of the art colony there. She is also known for her association with Clementine Hunter, Louisiana's famous folk artist. According to legend, on one visit to Melrose Plantation, Kinsey left behind her paints and brushes, which Hunter used to paint her first picture of a bouquet of zinnias. Kinsey was a trained, sophisticated artist, but she often painted directly-stated, semi-primitive paintings of patios, courtyards and historic buildings, perhaps under the influence of modernism. Notes: Raised on her family's farm in Ohio, Alberta Kinsey pursued an artistic career and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and Chicago Art School. When the school where Kinsey was teaching closed due to World War I, the artist moved to the French Quarter. There she found an emerging bohemian art colony of writers, artists and photographers hailed at the time as “the Renaissance of the Vieux Carre" by The Double-Dealer magazine. Kinsey immersed herself into the artistic community, participated in the Arts and Crafts Club, befriended writer Lyle Saxon and worked to preserve the historic and the then-deteriorating French Quarter. The painting "Fruit Stand, French Market" illustrates the once daily routine of shopping at one of the city's markets including the Poydras and St. Roch Markets.
