          Est: $1,200 - $1,800

Everett Raymond Kinstler (American/New York, b. 1926), "Seated Figure, Maine", oil on canvas board, signed lower right, signed, initialed and "Hollis Taggart Gallery" label with artist and title en verso, 20 in. x 16 in., framed. Note: Everett Raymond Kinstler started his artistic life in New York at the age of sixteen, working as a comic illustrator for publications such as Zorro, The Shadow, DC Comics and Marvel Comics. In 1945, Kinstler joined the Arts Students League where he recalls learning “not to copy but to capture spirit and essence” of his subjects. This approach clearly can be seen in the portrait offered here, where the sitter is posed en plein air. Kinstler captures the feeling of a gentleman on a leisurely day by employing expressionistic brushwork and a light, airy palette. Working in the art world for over 76 years, Kinstler was counted by Roy Lichtenstein as an influence (“He was Pop before Pop.”) and has inspired countless other artists. He has depicted many famous Hollywood stars, as well as seven American presidents. Ref.: Hafesh, Louis B. “Everett Raymond Kinstler: Reminiscing at His National Arts Club Studio”.
