Édition originale des deux recueils du Livre de la jungle. Les deux volumes sont ornés de jolies compositions in et hors texte dues au père de l’auteur, John Lockwood Kipling, et aux illustrateurs américains William Henry Drake et Paul Frenzeny. Beaux exemplaires bien conservés dans leurs jolies reliures d’éditeur. Quelques rousseurs éparses. On joint : – trois lettres de Kipling à son traducteur français Louis Fabulet, dont une carte autographe signée du 24 juillet 1913 et deux lettres tapuscrites signées de 1927 et 1928, avec leurs trois enveloppes adressées. La dernière détaille la signification du nom des personnages dans le Livre de la jungle : Bagheera, Baloo, Hathi, Nag, Bander, Shere Kahn, etc. – une belle carte autographe signée de Maurice Maeterlinck à Louis Fabulet : « Je viens de relire dans votre belle traduction le Second livre de la Jungle que j’avais lu autrefois dans le texte anglais, et voici que grâce à vous j’ai revu, mais plus nette, plus limpide et plus pure la vie aventureuse et essentielle de Mowgli.           La collection de Sam Josefowitz : Une vie de découvertes et d’érudition NICHOLSON, William (1872-1949) et Rudyard KIPLING (1865-1936) An Almanac of Twelve Sports. Londres : William Heinemann, 1898. NICHOLSON, William (1872-1949) et Rudyard KIPLING (1865-1936) An Almanac of Twelve Sports. Londres : William Heinemann, 1898. Un des « quelques exemplaires » de luxe, les seuls à comprendre des bois originaux de Nicholson, coloriés et signés par l’artiste. Chacun des superbes bois originaux est accompagné de vers de Rudyard Kipling. Cette association peut suprendre, car Kipling n’était pas féru de sport. Tout commence en réalité avec le portrait de Kipling que Nicholson réalise, à l’origine pour The New Review. L’artiste et son modèle conversent, et Nicholson parle à Kipling de son projet d’almanach sportif, pour lequel il doit réaliser douze bois. Kipling lui propose alors d’écrire les textes accompagnant les gravures. Le présent exemplaire est l’un des rares comprenant des bois originaux, coloriés et signés par l’artiste – dans le tirage courant, et ainsi l’écrasante majorité des exemplaires passés sur le marché, il s’agit de reproductions lithographiées, non signées. Voir la notice de John Radcliffe pour la Kipling Society [en ligne] ; Livingston, n°145. In-plano (425 x 330 mm). Un des « quelques exemplaires » (Livingston) avec les bois originaux, coloriés à la main et signés par l’artiste. Dans le tirage courant, les illustrations sont des reproductions lithographiées d’après les bois. Feuillets de texte imprimés sur papier vergé de Hollande van Gelder. 12 bois originaux de Nicholson, tous coloriés à la main, contrecollés sur de grands feuillets de carton épais, signés sur le carton. Entièrement monté sur onglets. Reliure de l’époque en maroquin rouge, exécutée pour Henry Arthur Johnstone (né en 1861), avec son super-libris sur les plats et sur la garde, reste du plat supérieur frappé d’éléments dorés évoquant le sport, dos à nerfs, caissons ornés dans le même esprit que les plats, doublures et gardes de cuir brun, tête dorée (usures aux mors, quelques griffures, taches et frottements). Provenance : Henry Arthur Johnstone (1861- circa 1921? ; super-libris) – Ralph Smith (ex-libris) -- Sam Josefowitz, Pully – puis par descendance aux propriétaires actuels. One of the few deluxe copies “printed direct from the original woodblocks, hand-coloured and signed by the artist”. The depicted sports are: hunting, coursing, racing, boating, fishing, cricket, archery, coaching, shooting, golf, boxing and skating. From the collection of Major Henry Arthur Johnstone (Royal Field Artillery), which was sold en bloc to a London bookseller in 1921 (Clements).

A.L.S., Rudyard Kipling, ome page, 8vo, Rue de Rivoli, Paris, 22nd November 1921, to Baron Rothschild, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Meurice. Kipling thanks his correspondent for their kindness 'of which I hope my wife & daughter and I will be able to avail ourselves tomorrow night'. With blak integral leaf. A couple of very light, minor creases, VG Walter Rothschild (1868-1937) 2nd Baron Rothschild. British banker, politician and zoologist. An active Zionist and close friend of Chaim Weizmann, Rothschild worked to formulate the draft declaration for a Jewish homeland in Palestine and received the Balfour Declaration in November 1917.

It is bound in custom half leather binding with the original cover conserved. The work was limited to 300 in publication and printed on Rives vellum.
