Painter, Sculptor, b. 1953 - d. 1997

Martin Kippenberger (25 February 1953 – 7 March 1997) was a German artist and sculptor known for his extremely prolific output in a wide range of styles and media, superfiction as well as his provocative, jocular and hard-drinking public persona.

Kippenberger was "widely regarded as one of the most talented German artists of his generation,"[1] according to Roberta Smith of the New York Times. He was at the center of a generation of German enfants terribles including Albert Oehlen, Markus Oehlen, Werner Büttner, Georg Herold, Dieter Göls, and Günther Förg.

Kippenberger was born in Dortmund in 1953, the only boy in a family with five children, with two elder and two younger sisters. His father was director of the Katharina-Elisabeth colliery, his mother a dermatologist.[2] When Kippenberger's mother was killed by a pallet falling off a truck,[3] he inherited enough money to live on.[4] He studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, where Sigmar Polke, despite not teaching him directly, influenced him.[5] After a sojourn in Florence, where he had his first solo show in 1977, he settled in Berlin in 1978. In that year he founded Kippenberger's Office with Gisela Capitain, mounting exhibitions of his own art and that of his friends. During that same period, Kippenberger also became business director of SO36, a performance, film and music space, and started a punk band called the Grugas, which recorded a single called Luxus with Christine Hahn and Eric Mitchell.[1] Leaving Berlin, originally for a long visit to Paris, Kippenberger spent the early 1980s as an active member of the Cologne art scene.

In Cologne, as elsewhere, Kippenberger did not limit himself to producing works of art; he worked on how the art was presented, the framework and the sideshows. "Martin was tremendously committed to the gallery's artists," Max Hetzler said. The Vienna gallerist Peter Pakesch thinks Kippenberger did an enormous amount for the Hetzler Gallery's success in his double role "as clown and strategist... Max without Martin's strategy would have been unimaginable in the early years." According to artist Jutta Koether, Kippenberger "was the one who brought movement to life so that it became known outside Cologne."[6]

In 1984, he became a founding member of the Lord Jim Lodge. After moving to Los Angeles in late 1989, he bought a 35% share in ownership of the Italian restaurant Capri in Venice, Los Angeles.[2] He stayed in Sankt Georgen im Schwarzwald as a guest of the Grässlin family of art collectors from 1980 to 1981, and later on and off from 1991 to 1994, in order to work but also to recover from his excessive life. In his last years he taught at the Städelschule and the Kassel Art Academy.

Martin Kippenberger died at age 44 from liver cancer at the Vienna General Hospital.[7]

He began his artistic training at the Hamburg Art Academy, where he studied from 1972 to 1976 under Rudolf Hausner and Franz Erhard Walther, among others. In 1978, he founded the exhibition project “Kippenbergers Büro” in Berlin together with Gisela Capitain and took over the management of the legendary music club SO36. He organized exhibitions and concerts and met Max Hetzler, who would later become his gallerist. In the tradition of Dada and Fluxus, Kippenberger worked to dismantle the traditional concept of art. With boundless energy, the artist created an extensive oeuvre from the 1970s until his untimely death in 1997, producing paintings and sculptures as well as installations and performances. Yes! The work offered here features an unusual portrait format. The image is defined by three rectangular fields in white, blue, and gray, with the paint applied thickly and unevenly. A large, roughly painted black-and-red “YES” dominates the white surface. The lettering appears spontaneous and provocative, which is typical of Kippenberger's ironic and often subversive approach. The work can be interpreted as a commentary on the art world of the time and on social expectations, in that it signals approval on the one hand, but at the same time critically questions a kind of empty, conformist affirmation. The minimalist presentation and the striking text reflect Kippenberger's examination of language, power structures and the role of the artist as a provocateur. Martin Kippenberger das 2. Sein, Museum für Neue Kunst, Karlsruhe 2003, p. 195 - Painter, performer, curator and self-performer - Kippenberger is an exceptional artist - Painting from the famous series of rubber and latex paintings - Shows the artist's jpy of experimenting with unconcentional materials One of the most influential artists of the post-war period, Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997) is a significant German artist who is known for the versatility, provocation and irony in his work. He works in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, performance and literature. He is considered one of the representatives of the ‘Neue Wilden’ (New Fauves) and initially studied at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts, where his teachers included Rudolf Hausner and Franz Erhard Walther. In the 1970s, he moved to Berlin, where he worked as a painter, performer and curator. His work is characterised by a postmodern approach that often questions social norms and conventional art concepts. Kippenberger made a name for himself above all through his ability to combine art historical and political themes with a humorous and often self-deprecating attitude. The meaning and status of art is repeatedly called into question. Despite his early death in 1997, he is now considered one of the most influential German artists of the post-war period. The latex and rubber pictures Throughout his life, experimenting with new media offered the artist a wide range of possibilities to explore his artistic themes in an innovative way. The painting offered here was created in 1990 – at a time when Kippenberger began to paint his famous latex and rubber pictures in the USA. For these works, thin sheets of different densities were poured and applied to mostly larger-than-life canvases. The models for these pictures were black-and-white photos: ‘Covered by the latex layer in a format-filling manner, they appeared as if they had been covered by a filter or as a substitute for the multi-layered pictorial structures that were otherwise typical of Kippenberger. The latex coating, which was translucent and torn in some places, also gave the images a sensual and vulnerable character.’ (Hermes, Manfred “Latex- und Gummibilder 1990/1991”, in: exhib. cat. After Kippenberger, Museum Moderner Kunst, Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna, Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, Vienna 2003, p.146) The large-format canvas offered here is covered with a brown latex layer that forms a fleshy, dirty, cracked surface with protruding rubber objects. Kippenberger stretches the latex over the canvas like a thin, translucent skin, so that the abstract drawing in black acrylic paint underneath remains visible. The artist even leaves some areas completely free of latex. The work clearly reflects Kippenberger's interest in different surfaces and textures. The materials used, such as latex and rubber, give the work a sensual, almost erotic dimension that evokes associations with fetishism, naked skin and sexuality. At the same time, the work shows traces of decay, thus pointing to the transience of life. Martin Kippenberger used the latex works to question and transcend the boundaries of painting. With this material, which is closely associated with eroticism, Kippenberger skilfully provoked the art world and questioned social norms and taboos. He created a total of over sixty monochrome latex and rubber works, which illustrates the relevance of these works within his oeuvre. Known for his provocative and self-reflective approach, Kippenberger often used humor, irony, and a play on his own identity in his works. In this poster, the title For Martin can be seen as a reference to his ongoing exploration of self-representation, blurring the lines between the artist and his creations. The exhibition itself, which featured photographs of his earlier installations, reflects Kippenberger’s fascination with the art world’s perception of artists and their work, turning the exhibition space into a commentary on both his career and the broader art scene. This poster encapsulates his critical, yet playful, take on fame, identity, and the art establishment.

Ulrich Strothjohann was Kippenberger's (1953-1997) studio assistant, constructing many of his more complex works through the 1980s. He was rewarded for his services with various artwork, including the current installation. This prototype presents Kippenberger's original vision for the work but for technical reasons it was decided to switch materials for the Y and the Z. In the edition, the Z is manufactured from a packing crate and the Y is painted rather than cork. It could be said that these adjustments, which were made to facilitate construction, obscure Kippenberger's first instincts. Das Ende des Alphabets is an expression of Kippenberger's fascination with the mechanics of communication and understanding, contrasting the finality, and familiarity, of the last letters of the alphabet with the many questions raised by the unexpectedly heterodox materials.
