        Joshua Kirby (1716-1774) The West View of Walton-Priory in the County of Suffolk pen, ink and monochrome wash, unframed 23 x 36.5cm Provenance: Peter Foster of Harcourt, Hemingford Grey The Suffolk-born son of the topographer, John Kirby, Joshua Kirby’s interest in landscape was inspired by his friendship with Thomas Gainsborough. Encouraged by the antiquary, Sir Joseph Ayloffe, Kirby prepared images of the principal buildings and monuments throughout Suffolk. This work is likely to be the lost original by Joshua Kirby previously known from a copy by Hamlet Watling (see Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History, 2000, Vol. XXXIX, Part 4, Fig. 121, p. 435 & p. 436) and reproduced in John Kirby’s map of 1740.
