    Nov. 22, 2014

TSUNETOMI (1880 - 1947): BEAUTIFUL DAME OBSERVING FLYING SEEDS

    Est: - €2,800

Painting on silk. Japan, Meiji- until Taisho-period, approx. 1900 to 1st third 20th cent.Tsunetomi was a prominent painter of Bijin, female beauties. The artist attended the school of the brilliant Yoshitoshi, until he established his own school in 1924. Many of his woodblock designs are also well-known. The painting shows a bust portrait of a young courtesan with very fine facial features and deep-black hair; a very good contrast to the white colors of her face. In the towering hair are hairpins and a comb. The girls is observing a flying seed that is being blown past by the wind. An allusion to her yearning for a lover. On the left, a strongly abbreviated signature in Sosho, which is denoted as Kitano Tsunetomi on the original portfolio (the upper three characters are read as Hane-oi and hint towards the game with a shuttlecock, as the flying seed bears a similar appearance). The silk portrait is threaded; there are gold spots on the back forming a pattern. Very good condition.SIZE 27,1 x 24,3 CMFrom an Austrian private collection
