    Antique 1925 watercolor painting depicting woman holding two sculls by listed Japanese artist Kobayakawa Kiyoshi (1897-1948).Signed and dated 1925. Size: Framed: 61" x 25 1/2"; Unframed 54" x 13 1/2".Kobayakawa Kiyoshi (1896-1948) was born in Hakata, Fukuoka province, Kyushu. Starting in 1918, he studied with the Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) artist Kaburagi Kiyokata 1878-1972), whose other students included Ito Shinsui, Kawase Hasui, Torii Kotondo, Shiro Kasamasu, and Yamakawa Shûhô.His art prints were featured in the second exhibition of Japanese prints held in Toledo, USA, in 1936.~ .     Kiyoshi Kobayakawa, Japanese 1897-1948- 'Le Jardin Anglais' (the English garden), 1924; oil on board, signed and dated, 'Le Continental Menkes, Bruxelles' transportation label attached verso, 16 x 22cm Note: Kobayakawa was born in Fukuoka, Japan in 1897. He was a pupil of the famous painter and print-maker Kaburagi Kiyokata before joining the Teiten group of artists. After coming to Europe in the mid-1920s he underwent a radical aesthetic change, adopting a delicate Impressionist technique as a result. He exhibited in Brussels and Paris and was featured in the Exposition d’Art Japonais at the Jeu de Paume in 1929. He is also known for his woodcuts. Kobayakawa’s work is in the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. Please refer to department for condition report framed
