Paul Klee Sold at Auction Prices

Etcher, Painter, b. 1879 - d. 1940

Born in Switzerland in 1879, artist Paul Klee was a gifted musician to whom, at age 11, the Bern Music Association extended an invitation. His interests turned to art in his teens, and in 1898, he began studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Influenced by his love of music and German Expressionist art, he believed art should express the metaphysical. His 1914 journey to Tunisia proved the catalyst that pushed him toward abstract paintings, with his art emphasizing shapes and color.

Beginning in 1921, artist Paul Klee spent 10 years teaching at the Bauhaus and two years at Dusseldorf. Expressionism art proved his escape from the traumas of World War II, and Paul Klee's artwork is often colorful, vibrant, and thought-provoking. Returning to Switzerland in 1933, he experienced a burst of creativity before his death in 1940. Paul Klee's art for sale is highly respected for its emphasis on the subconscious, mystical, and psychological, and still influences today's artists. Invite lively conversation by adding vibrant vintage abstract paintings to your growing collection.

1923. Colour lithograph. From the edition of 220 out of the overall edition of 300. Signed in pencil lower right: Klee, as well as dated and with the work number lower left: 1923 138. Image 44 × 26,7 cm on laid paper by BSB (with the 2 watermarks) 52,2 × 37,9 cm. Published by Verlag der Marées-Gesellschaft, R. Piper & Co. (with the blind stamp), Munich. Printed by Staatliches Bauhaus, Weimar. From the portfolio "Kunst der Gegenwart". Exhibited: Kornfeld, no. 95.IV.c. One of Paul Klee's best-known graphic works is ‘The tightrope walker’ from 1923, which appeared in the portfolio ‘Kunst der Gegenwart’ together with other prints by various artists. In this period, Klee often worked with simple, geometric forms, which he assembled into complex figures. In ‘The tightrope walker’, the figure is highly abstracted and consists of geometric elements that skilfully express the essence of balance and instability. Here, Klee uses just one colour stone, leaving a broad straight cross in the centre of the picture, which defines the surface both vertically and horizontally. This static element also defines the coordinates of an imaginary space in which the linear scaffolding and the tightrope walker, printed in black, appear to float. By choosing a light pink colour, Klee creates a composition that conveys both artistic lightness and a profound exploration of the theme of balance. The play of shapes and lines suggests balance in both the physical and metaphorical sense. The tightrope walker could be understood as an allegory of life: uncertainty, the constant striving for balance and the need to find stability in movement. Not least in questions of love - the ‘tightrope walker’ hovers above the suggested profile of a young woman. Paul Klee, who is closely associated with the Bauhaus art movement, shows in this lithograph how art can be both playful and profound, using simple forms and colours to depict universal human experiences. ------------------------------------------------- PAUL KLEE (Münchenbuchsee 1879–1940 Muralto) Seiltänzer. 1923. Farblithografie.

22 August 1931. Book of Blueprints (Cyanotypes) 72 plates in total. For Paul Klee - Handzeichnungen 1921-1930. The cyanotypes are the maquette for Klee’s book of Handzeichnungen 1921-1930 with an introduction by Will Grohmann, renowned art critic. The book was published in 1934 and confiscated in 1936 by the Nazis. Grohmann’s introduction was typed by Mathilde (Til) Thiele. As money was scarce, Klee gave Til the book of cyanotypes in lieu of pay. Will Grohmann”s signature in pencil is on the first page. Note: Palucca one of the most recognized dancers of Germany's Weimar Republic (1918-1933). Regularly featured in mainstream women's style magazines such as Die Dame and Uhu (The Owl), Palucca served as a model of the New Woman, the media icon of the fashionably emancipated woman, whose liberation was signified, in large part, through modern movement. At the same time, Palucca cultivated connections with the avant-garde, especially with artists. Art and dance critic Will Grohmann introduced her to the cultural elite; a Piet Mondrian painting hung in her dance studio; Palucca purchased a Paul Klee painting as a birthday gift for her husband; and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner filled sketchbooks with drawings of her solo dance rehearsals. In other words, Palucca promoted herself as a mass-media star and an avant-garde performer. Provenance Note: Mathilde (Til) Thiele was a German expressionist dancer and choreographer active in the early 20th century. Known for her intense and expressive performances, she was a prominent figure in the dance and performing arts scene. Thiele was influenced by the German expressionist dance movement, which emphasized emotive and exaggerated movements to convey psychological states, often without the constraints of classical ballet. She integrated these elements into her own style, which combined theatricality, emotional depth, and a strong connection to visual art and music of her time. Til’s early life exposed her to many famous artists; living next door to Auguste Macke, who traveled to Egypt and Tunisia with Paul Klee. Later she knew Klee from the Bauhaus.

Paul Klee (1879-1940) Swiss/German, Lithograph Depicts a reclining woman with a stylized heart in her midsection. Signature lower right. Titled "Winter." Originally printed 1938. Framed. Overall: 17 3/4 x 23 3/4 in.  Sight: 10 1/4 x 13 3/4 in.  #3635 #4 .  Paul Klee was born in December 1879 in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland into a family of musicians, and became proficient at the violin. Drawn to art, he studied from 1898 to 1901 in Munich, first with Heinrich Knirr, then at the Kunstakademie under Franz von Stuck. Primitive art, surrealism, cubism, and children’s art all blended into his small-scale and delicate paintings, watercolors, and drawings. Upon completing his schooling he traveled to Italy to study Early Christian and Byzantine art. After his marriage in 1906 to the pianist Lili Stumpf, Klee settled in Munich, Germany, then an important center for avant-garde art. His friendship with the painters Wassily Kandinsky and August Macke prompted him to join Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an expressionist group that contributed much to the development of abstract art. In 1920 he was appointed to the faculty of the Bauhaus, teaching in Weimar from 1921 to 1926 and in Dessau from 1926 to 1931. After exhibitions in New York and Paris from 1924 to 1930, he went to Dusseldorf to teach at the Akademie in 1931, shortly before the Nazis closed the Bauhaus. Forced by the Nazis to leave Germany in 1933, Klee settled in Bern. Seventeen of his works were included in the Nazi exhibition of “degenerate art,” Entartete Kunst, in 1937. Major Klee exhibitions took place in Bern and Basel in 1935 and in Zurich in 1940. He died in June 1940, in Muralto-Locarno, Switzerland.
