Originally featuring a detailed TWA Constellation, the design was later updated to include the silhouette of a jet plane as the airline embraced the Jet Age. Recognized as Klein’s most celebrated work, it was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art just a year after its release. In the post-WWII era, as Howard Hughes expanded TWA’s routes and air travel surged in popularity, posters like this played a crucial role in promoting the allure of flying. Times Square, often considered the center of the world, remains a symbol of excitement, and Klein’s masterful portrayal of its neon brilliance cements this piece as a defining example of 1950s advertising and Mad Men-era design.

David Klein TWA / Africa c. 1955 39 h x 25 w in (99 x 63 cm) Z is for Zippy. Klein is best known for his destination advertisements on behalf of TWA in the 1950s and '60s. His typography, coloration, and aesthetics were both defined by, and helped define, American style of the period. To express the idea that TWA knows Africa A to Z, he creates a hypnotic convocation of zebras in the tall Serengeti grass. It's a classic example of mid-century modern design. Orriginal Vintage David Klein TWA Paris Eifel Tower Poster Small Format C1960

    Est: $800 - $1,200

This Paris poster was created in 1962 by the gifted American artist David Klein (1918 -2005) for TWA. The image shows the iconic Eiffel Tower in a very festive and colorful manner. The bright colors of the fireworks contrast perfectly with the black background. TWA (Trans World Airlines) was formed in 1924 as Transcontinental & Western Air. The airline's first route was New York to Los Angeles, soon followed by multiple National routes. The airline expanded to serve Europe, the Middle East and Asia after WWII when the company was under the control of Howard Hughes, owner from 1939 until 1961. Hughes was a dominant force in expanding and promoting the routes flown by his company. The economy was vastly improving, and travels through air for business and pleasure increased too. Posters were a key element to promoting this form of travel and TWA. The airline started a decline in the 1970s that ended up in a third bankruptcy that caused their acquisition by American Airlines in 2001. The airline operated in 132 destinations worldwide and had a fleet size of 190. The artist of the poster, David Klein, was best known for his influential work in advertising. Although he produced illustrations for Broadway theatrical productions, Hollywood films, the United States Army, and numerous corporate clients, Klein is best remembered for the iconic travel images he created for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines (TWA) during the 1950's and 1960's. To learn more about artist David Klein go to https://postergroup.com/blogs/the-ross-art-group-blog/david-klein-posters-as-portals-of-discovery This small format is rare as the poster is often seen in a larger size (approx. 25” x 40”). Original David Klein c1955 Poster - Fly TWA London - Big Ben

    Est: $800 - $1,200

David Klein was a noted poster designer whose body of work was prominent in the advertisements for TWA. In this 1950'S design, we see some of the sites to be visited in London, including Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. This poster was part of an extensive series by TWA to promote tourist travel in the late 1950's and early 1960's.
