MARK KLETT (Albany, United States, 1952). "Balancing Rocks, road to Lee's Ferry", "Marble Canyon, Arizona", "Untitled". 1986. Photograph (Triptych). Copy 16/50. Provenance: Estheryoh Stern Gallery (Arizona). With label from Estheryoh Stern Gallery (Arizona). Two of the photographs are titled at the lower left. One of the photographs is dated in the lower area. Size: 50 x 40 cm (x3). Triptych made up of three photographs dominated by a large natural formation, which varies in each case, forcing the spectator to reflect on the perspective and the point of view from which specific moments are observed or captured. All three pieces are finished in black and white, in such a way as to give a sense of documentary photography, reminiscent in some ways of the industrial landscapes of Bernd and Hilla Becher, but in this case focusing the gaze on the natural. He lives in Temple (Arizona, USA), where he is Regents Professor of Art at Arizona State University. He is interested in the intersection of culture, landscape and time. Klett began working as a photographer in the 1960s. Previously, he had worked as a geologist. In 1984, he published Second View, a vast project to re-photograph the scenery of the American West that well-known photographers such as Timothy O'Sullivan, among others, recorded in the course of expeditions commissioned by the Federal Government during the second half of the 19th century. With this project, Klett generated, at the same time, three important elements: the methodology necessary to develop the rigorous genre of rephotography, the human team necessary to encompass the ambitious aims of his projects, and a discourse on the construction of the collective imaginary. At the end of the 1990s, Klett took up the same work again, which led him to publish the monograph Third Views, Second Sights, which brings together the images made in the 19th century, those of the 1970s and those of the end of the 20th century.

    • MARK KLETT Bullet Riddled Saguaro 1982
      Sep. 30, 2020

MARK KLETT Bullet Riddled Saguaro 1982

      Est: $1,200 - $1,800

MARK KLETT Bullet Riddled Saguaro near Fountain Hills AZ., 11/21/82, 16x20" Gelatin Silver Print. Signed, titled, dated, silver ink front, '©1982' verso pencil. ASG# MK2/1020 A classic early revealing the subtlety of man's bullet marks on the landscape. Mark Klett's (b.1952) landscape photography is informed equally by irony, criticism, conservationism, and residual pastoral romanticism. Like the New Topographics photographers, he considers history and human activity part of the natural landscape. He photographs evidence of human interaction with the land, using formal beauty to invite the critical reflection of the spectator. Klett, born in Albany, New York, earned a B.S. in geology in 1974 from St. Lawrence University and an MFA in photography from the State University of New York, Buffalo, in conjunction with the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester in 1977. From 1977-79, he worked as a field assistant for the United States Geological Survey in Denver. In 1977, with Ellen Manchester and Jo Ann Verburg, Klett conceived and initiated the Rephotographic Survey Project, which was funded by Polaroid and the National Endowment for the Arts. The project, which retraced the work of nineteenth-century geological survey photographers, was published under the title Second View in 1984. More than 120 of the sites of these initial documentary images--taken by William Henry Jackson, Timothy O'Sullivan, and Alexander Gardner, and others--were photographed, and the book pairs the images for comparison. Klett has received four National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, and was named photographer of the year by the Friends of Photography in 1993. Since 1982, he has been at the School of Art at Arizona State University. He has published 16 books and been in hundreds of exhibitions and in in the collections of most major art museums in the United States.Lisa Soccio credit https://www.icp.org/browse/archive/constituents/mark-klett?all/all/all/all/0

Mark Klett (American, born 1952); Panorama of San Francisco, from California Street Hill; (9)

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Panorama of San Francisco, from California Street Hill, 1990 San Francisco, Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, 1990. eight gelatin silver prints (of 13), each flush-mounted, edition number 20/50, signed by the artist and edition number in pencil on the colophon page, each in excellent condition, each framed. In 1878 Eadweard Muybridge climbed with his cumbersome wooden view camera to the top of California Street in San Francisco to make a 360-degree panorama of the city. In 1990 Mark Klett revisited the idea with Panorama of San Francisco. Klett's goal was to match Muybridge's photographs-something no longer possible in 1990 from the same spot because of the skyline created during the century spanning the two projects.
