Yuliy Yulevich (Julius) Klever (31 January 1850-24 December 1924) was a Russian painter best known for his highly mystical, sublime, and Romantic landscape paintings. Set in dense Russian forests at night or dusk, Klever’s work was rendered in a stylized, high-contrast aesthetic that featured intricate detail and saturated hues.

Julius Sergius von Klever was born in Dorpat (Tartu) in what is now Estonia. Konstantin von Kügelgen, whose father and uncle had been court painters to the tsars, gave him access to art and in particular to works by Caspar David Friedrich, as his uncle Gerhard von Kügelgen had been a friend of the German painter. Julius Sergius von Klever studied at the Academy in St Petersburg. The painting shows one of the artist's favourite subjects, with which he became famous at the time: a forest covered in deep snow, which gives him the opportunity to demonstrate his great painterly virtuosity. Trees with gnarled branches and slender birch trees frame a path that leads to a clearing where a lonely house crouches among the tall trees. Snow lies high on the branches, on the ground and on the roof of the house. In the centre of the picture, a person can be seen from behind, collecting firewood and trudging through the deep snow with a stick. The branches draw a calligraphic pattern against the sky, which is characterised by a light pink hue in contrast to the bluish shadow on the snow in the foreground. Oil on canvas , 53.5 × 80.5 cm . ROMANTISCHE ABENDSTIMMUNG IM WINTERWALD Öl auf Leinwand. 122,5 x 96,5 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert „1912“. In breitem teilvergoldeten Prunkrahmen. Blick auf einen hohen verschneiten Tannenwald mit schneebedeckten Bäumen und Ästen, in deren Mitte ein kleiner Bachlauf zu erkennen ist, in dem sich das gelb-rötliche Licht der untergehenden Sonne stimmungsvoll widerspiegelt. Im Hintergrund rechts ein kleines schneebedecktes Haus, aus dessen Schornstein Rauch in den Himmel steigt. Hervorragende, qualitätvolle Malerei des berühmten Künstlers, in der der Einfluss Caspar David Friedrichs deutlich zu spüren ist. Der Künstler wurde von dem Maler Constantin von Kugelgen (1810-1880) unterrichtet, der ihm das Werk von Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) nahebrachte. Von Kugelgen war in Dresden ein enger Freund des Hauptmeisters der Deutschen Romantik. Als er noch keine 18 Jahre alt war, verließ er sein Zuhause, um ein Studium in Sankt Petersburg aufzunehmen. 1874 wird Klever Gründungsmitglied einer Bewegung der Petersburger Kunstausstellungsgesellschaft und erhält bei deren Ausstellung den ersten Preis. Mehrere seiner Gemälde wurden von der Zarenfamilie erworben, was seinen gewaltigen Aufstieg förderte. So erwarb Pawel Michailowitsch Tretjakow 1880 das Gemälde „Urwald auf der Insel Nargen“ für seine Sammlung. 1881 folgte die Verleihung des Professorentitels an Klever durch die Kunstakademie Sankt Petersburg. Aufgrund seiner großen Reputation in Europa ernennt Alexander III den von ihm sehr geschätzten Klever zum Kunstkommissar für die Weltausstellung 1885 in Antwerpen. Spätherbstliche Waldlandschaft bei Vollmond. Öl auf Leinwand. 113,5 x 77,9 cm. Unten rechts datiert "1903" und in kyrillischer Schrift signiert, verso auf der Leinwand in Deutsch bezeichnet "Russischer Wald im Spätherbst / J. v. Klever". Der 1850 als Sohn deutscher Eltern im estnischen Dorpat (Tartu) geborene Julius von Klever erhielt schon als Gymnasiast ersten Unterricht bei dem Landschaftsmaler Constantin von Kügelgen. Ab 1867 besuchte er die Akademie von St. Petersburg, wo er unter Baron Michail Klodt und Ssokrat Worobjoff Architektur- und Landschaftsmalerei studierte. Ab 1873 beteiligte er sich an zahlreichen Ausstellungen und wurde 1881 mit nur 31 Jahren zum Professor an der Akademie ernannt. Im Jahre 1893 erhob ihn der Zar, welcher selbst eine große Zahl seiner Gemälde erwarb, in den Adelsstand. Auch im Ausland wurden Klevers Landschaften sehr geschätzt. Er nahm vielbeachtet an Ausstellungen in München, Paris und Berlin teil, wo er ab dem Jahre 1905 auch für einige Zeit lebte und arbeitete. Seine zwischen realistischer Naturauffassung und feiner Stimmungsmalerei angesiedelten Landschaften geben die melancholische Schönheit seiner russischen Heimat in unvergleichlicher Weise wieder und bescherten Klever großen künstlerischen Erfolg. - Provenienz: Privatsammlung München. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Relined. Some overall surface grime, two small visible repaired tears, some craquelure along the lower edge. UV light inspection showed heavy varnish and overall scattered spots of retouching. N.B. Klodt. Awarded with multiple medals, he soon acquired a considerable reputation. He was a founding member of the Society of Exhibitions of Works of Art 1874 and was an Academician 1878 and professor 1881. He organised the Russian sections at the Exposition Universelle in Antwerp 1885 and the Jubilaums Ausstellung der Koniglichen Akademie der Kunste in Berlin, 1886, gold medal. He painted romantic landscapes in Estonia and the Gulf of Finland, 1875 to 1900, and taught at the School of Drawing of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. 1902. One of a kind artwork.
