III, Salzburg 1984, no. 2756, ill. p. 163 The motif of the standing female nude figure is frequently found in Klimt’s paintings and reached a particular highpoint in his final creative years. In his drawings, Klimt never tired of capturing the physical features and temperaments of his standing models, whether in connection with his paintings or in a completely independent working process. Alice Strobl assigns the present drawing to the numerous studies that Klimt created for the frontal nude figure in the painting "Girlfriends II" ("Die Freundinnen II", 1916/17, burnt at Immendorf Castle in 1945). She places this study in the early phase of preparatory work for "Girlfriends II" – which, according to her research, can be dated to as early as 1915. In this early group of studies, "three-dimensional values are clearly emphasised, finding expression in a more full-figured type, rounded contours and a concentration of lines in certain places" (Strobl, vol. III, p. 155). In our drawing, the partly flowing, partly broken lines result in a vibrant pulsation of the contours, causing the blank areas of skin to shine out from their equally empty surroundings. An element of tension characteristic of Klimt’s work is created by the way the head and lower legs are cut across by the edges of the sheet. Despite these barriers, the figure seems to come sensually close to us. (Marian Bisanz-Prakken)

Zimpel’ on verso 17,3 x 12,2 in framed (museum glass) This pencil drawing by Gustav Klimt, showing a seated male nude with a child in his arms, is a study for a detail from Klimt's controversial work ‘Medicine’. The central depiction in the painting shows a pair of people seen from behind, which only appears with a child in the 1903. The drawing reflects Klimt's intensive exploration of the human figure and his individual style, which developed in the mid-1890s. During this period, he turned away from the academic traditions that had characterised his early career and became a pioneer of Viennese Art Nouveau. ‘Medicine’ was part of the scandalous faculty paintings Klimt created for Vienna University, which were considered too modern and provocative at the time. The present pencil study was made by the artist for the ‘Medicine’ shown at the Klimt Collective in 1903. This is the only one to feature the human couple with a child seen from the back, which appears in all the states. Provenance: The artist's estate. Though a "fine art" painter, Klimt was an outstanding exponent of the equality between the fine and decorative arts. Having achieved some of his early success by painting within a greater architectural framework, he accepted many of his best-known commissions designed to complement other elements of a complete interior, thereby creating a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art). It is documented that early in Klimt's career he worked in a classical style for a number of civic commissions he received.

H. Hofstätter, Gustav Klimt. Erotische Zeichnungen, Köln 1979, no. 16, ill. 15 For Klimt, both as a draftsman and painter, the love between man and woman played a central role. Everyone knows his painting "The Kiss", but less well-known are the drawings in which he candidly explores the act of love. The earliest studies of this kind emerged just before 1900 as part of his modern allegories of life, "Philosophy" (1900–1907) and "Medicine" (1901–1907), paying homage to the act of procreation as a key moment in the cycle of life. Since then, drawings on this theme have become an integral part of Klimt’s work – whether in the context of his allegories of life or as standalone pieces. Whether intensely dynamic or deeply introspective, the works dedicated to the act of love rank among his most intoxicating creations. This is also evident in the present autonomous work, which, according to Alice Strobl, was clearly inspired by Japanese erotic woodblock art. Particularly striking here is the tension between the empty space at the bottom, with the carefully placed signature, and the densely structured upper section, where the two lovers intertwine in complex overlaps. The calculated intersections of limbs and fabric do not detract from the dynamism and expressiveness of the lines. Klimt places the strongest accents in the woman’s hair and face, whose inward smile sets the tone for the entire work. Marian Bisanz-Prakken

In Klimt’s late allegory The Virgin (1912/13), six women, swirling in veils and garlands of flowers, encircle the dreamlike, stylized central figure. Their body types, infused with a broad spectrum of temperaments and erotic moods, are reflected in the numerous nude drawings Klimt created in this context. An outstanding example from this large group is the largely autonomous study of a woman sitting on the ground, veiled by a large drape, with her hands raised in prayer. Alice Strobl associated this figure with the bride depicted in The Virgin, which seems to prefigure Klimt’s unfinished masterpiece "The Bride" (1917/18). This fascinating figure appears to embody two worlds: below, the naked, slightly spread legs, whose plane naturalness is emphasized by black stockings; above, the mysterious transparency of the shimmering white veil, revealing only a closed eye (likely inspired by Jan Toorop’s Symbolist masterpiece "The Three Brides") and flowing further on the ground. Klimt masterfully brings out this internal conflict, which, as so often, may symbolically refer to opposing pairs such as spirit and matter, chaste distance and sensual intimacy, or spirituality and overt display.
