An sein Studium der Graphik und Zeichnung 1973-1980 an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart schloss Dietrich Klinge ab 1980 ein Studium der Bildhauerei bei Herbert Baumann und Alfred Hrdlicka an. Aus den groben, wie von Natursteinen oder Holz inspirierten Oberflächen seiner Bronzen arbeitet Klinge meist aufs Wesentliche reduzierte Gesichter oder Körperteile wie Hände heraus.
