Klinger, Julius.Die lustige Puppe. Admiralspalast. Täglich das neue Eisballett. Beginn ½ 9 Uhr abends. Kleinplakat. Farblithographie. 34,4 x 47 cm. Berlin, Hollerbaum & Schmidt, o. J. (1913). -- DfP 1771.

Condition B: creases and restoration at edges, in image and along vertical fold; repaired tears at edges. Advertising a National Flying Week event, Klinger has created an unforgettable image of four anachronistic orange men in identical ruffled collars, their heads, and noses, pointing straight up to the sky, watching the (unseen) activity over head. One of several variations used in different years, always advertising a flying exhibition. Klinger 74, Rademacher p. 106 (var), Kunst Kommerce Visionen 253.

        Karikaturisten-Ball. 1912.

        Est: $6,000 - $8,000

ARTIST: JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1942) SIZE: 40 1/4 x 30 1/2 in./102.2 x 77.6 cm PRINTER: Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin DESCRIPTION: The notion that caricatures can sting is made delightfully graphic in this superior design by Klinger for a caricaturists’ ball in pre-World War I Berlin. The poster also “incorporate[s] one of Klinger’s favorite visual tricks, in that [it forces] the viewer to focus on the poster more concretely because the focal point is slightly off-center... The bald, red-nosed subject of the ball at the Admirals Palace seems unaware of the caterpillar crawling up the side of his head. Against the backdrop of a city literally vibrating with energy and plastered with posters, [Klinger’s] works couldn’t fail to stand out” (Klinger, p. 55). (Art Nouveau; German)

Klinger studied art in Vienna, and worked in Berlin for the printer and publisher Hollerbaum & Schmidt, as well as for the satiric magazine Lustige Blätter. He was a prolific, versatile and inventive graphic artist, recognized as one of the best German poster artists and illustrators working in pre-War Berlin. He was also an accomplished typographer, whose style ranged from the flat tones and strong outlining (popular in Germany at the time), to bold and daring graphic constructions and humorous caricatures, to strictly typographic pieces like this one. The dramatic and exaggerated Umlauts in this poster are just one of many examples of Klinger's typographic experimentation. DFP-III 1717, Klinger p. 138.

ARTIST: JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1942) SIZE: 34 1/2 x 49 1/4 in./87.7 x 125.2 cm PRINTER: Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin DESCRIPTION: Julius Klinger was one of the most gifted graphic artists of his generation. Born in Vienna, he relocated to Berlin and began a career as both a conceptual thinker and designer. He wrote extensively on the philosophy of advertising and created an altogether new design language during the 1920s. He was persecuted, deported, and killed by the Nazis in 1942. This catches him at the very beginning of his career, anticipating the flat colors, crisp lines, and geometric precision of Art Deco, on behalf of an unknown entertainer. Etingen notes that "the sense of graphic strength in La Joëla is further emphasized by Klinger's limited use of text and the unadulterated exuberance of the dancer in the poster. She is the embodiment of a proud New Woman: unapologetic, proud, and strong" (Klinger, p. 79). (Art Nouveau; Dance; German)

        La Joëla. 1910.

        Est: $6,000 - $7,000

ARTIST: JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1942) SIZE: 33 3/4 x 47 in./85.7 x 119.5 cm PRINTER: Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin DESCRIPTION: Julius Klinger was one of the most gifted graphic artists of his generation. Born in Vienna, he relocated to Berlin and began a career as both a conceptual thinker and designer. He wrote extensively on the philosophy of advertising and created an altogether new design language during the 1920s. He was persecuted, deported and killed by the Nazis in 1942. This catches him at the very beginning of his career, anticipating the flat colors, crisp lines and geometric precision of Art Deco, on behalf of an unknown entertainer. Etingen notes that "the sense of graphic strength in La Joëla is further emphasized by Klinger's limited use of text and the unadulterated exuberance of the dancer in the poster. She is the embodiment of a proud New Woman: unapologetic, proud and strong" (Klinger, p. 79). Magnificent colors here. (Entertainment; Art Deco)

Artist: JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1942) Size: 37 x 26 in./94 x 66 cm Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin Klinger became one of Germany's most forward-thinking graphic designers in the inter-war years, with an eye for strong geometrical symmetries and small touches of wit. Here's a Berliner Theater poster for the silent film "Bummelstudenten," by Rudolf Bernauer, released in 1916. Literal translation: "Student Stroll." More accurate: "Permanent Student" (!) Equipped with guitar, and fruit and libations at the ready, this superannuated university lad is about to charm himself into the arms of a society girl. *Provenance: Gail Chisholm Estate, NYC. Artist: JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1942) Size: 37 1/4 x 28 in./94.6 x 71 cm Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Germany Julius Klinger was one of the most gifted graphic artists of his generation. Born in Vienna, he relocated to Berlin and began a career as both a conceptual thinker and designer. He wrote extensively on the philosophy of advertising and created an altogether new design language during the 1920s. He was persecuted, deported and killed by the Nazis in 1942. This catches him at the very beginning of his career, as an illustrator with phenomenally precise lines and graphic-novel-type touches. It's a beautiful moment: the erudite gentleman, dressed to the nines, encounters someone's neglected cigarette in an ashtray, still lit, the column of smoke rising in temptation. He looks over: it might be rude, he appears to be saying; but why let a good thing go to waste? (Tobacco; Art Nouveau)

Artist: JULIUS KLINGER (1876-1942) Size: 37 1/4 x 27 1/4 in./94.7 x 69.3 cm Hollerbaum & Schmidt, Berlin Silhouettes of fantastical flying machines, flocking like birds without feathers, adorn the sky. Down below, Julius Klinger draws upon a favorite motif of his (cf PAI-XXVI, 83): identical figures of Dutch masters, craning necks skyward to look at the marvels above. They're all urging you to exult in the summer air parade from Berlin to Leipzig and Dresden. Klinger went on to become one of the great figures of inter-war German graphic design, and a master of the Modernist ethos. (Aviation)

Poignant and magnificent, it's a universal statement of ambition. Not only is it thought to be the first poster depicting this symbolic subject; it's also an apt metaphor for the career of Julius Klinger, which was to rise from this image from a "General Air Show Exhibition" to one of Germany's most influential inter-war graphic designers.
