View of the Grimburgwal, Amsterdam Signed lower right Oil on canvas, 100.3 x 80.6 cm Provenance: - Kunsthandel H. van der Kloet, The Hague - Kunsthandel Pieter A. Scheen, The Hague - Auction Christie's, Amsterdam, 11 November 1987, lot 446 - Leslie Smith Gallery, Wassenaar, 1990s - Auction Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 13 December 2010, lot 3 - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Karel Klinkenberg is best known for his atmospheric cityscapes, particularly his beloved scenes of Amsterdam. His paintings capture the essence of the city's iconic canals, bridges and historic buildings, often painted in the soft light of winter or the stillness of twilight. There’s a timeless charm to these works, which transport viewers to a quieter, more romanticized Amsterdam. Despite the city’s dynamic environment, Klinkenberg’s careful compositions convey a sense of calm, revealing his talent for finding moments of peace within urban life. Klinkenberg’s style is rooted in a precise, realistic approach. Trained at the Hague Academy of Art, he often used a subtle, cool colour palette to reflect the gentle northern light, adding depth and mood to each scene. With remarkable attention to detail, he captures the play of light on water and brick, using delicate brushstrokes to depict even the smallest reflections and textures. This careful technique, combined with his sensitivity to Amsterdam’s unique character, gives his cityscapes an almost photographic clarity while maintaining a personal and poetic touch. Klinkenberg’s works are held in several Dutch museums, including the Kunstmuseum in The Hague, the Dordrechts Museum and Teylers Museum in Haarlem. His cityscapes are key pieces in their collections, reflecting the essence of the Hague School. * Condition report available upon request

O/80-1. Provenance:-The artist's studio auction, ‘Atelier J.C.K. Klinkenberg’, Kunsthandel Jack Niekerk, Pulchri Studio, The Hague, 9 December 1924, lot 72.  -Collection Smits van Waesberghe, thence by descent to the present owner. , Please compare this lot to other paintings of the Oude Gracht in Utrecht by Klinkenberg in: Laanstra 2000, cat. no. O/22,5-1 and cat. no. O/47-3. Klinkenberg was briefly taught by romantic marine painter Louis Meijer (1809-1866) as early as the age of 14, after being educated at the Tekenacademie and Academie van Beeldende kunsten in The Hague. After this, he would receive instructions mainly from the painter Christoffel Bisschop (1828-1904), who was known for his paintings of interiors and historical pieces. Bisschop taught Klinkenberg how to work with contrasts of light and dark and also how to use thick, impasto-like paint. At the Living Masters exhibitions in 1875 and 1876, two paintings by the young painter were successfully sold and donated to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, respectively. From then on, Klinkenberg's name was forever established among art lovers. Not only because of the sunny character of his work, but especially because of the combination he made between his own historical interest and the rich tradition of the Dutch townscape.Almost all historical Dutch cities and towns have been visited by the painter since 1876. He favoured Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam, which he depicted in a variety of artworks. In each place, he had his preferred spots. In his Utrecht work, for instance, the Oude Gracht is almost always at the centre of the composition. When his audience appreciated his depiction of a particular location, he did not hesitate to make variations on that theme, always from a different angle and with different contrasts. More views of Utrecht's Oude Gracht are known in this way, especially summer ones, two of which are depicted in Laanstra’s monograph (p. 150 and p. 56).Klinkenberg's cityscapes rival the best works of other well-known 19th-century painters. In concept and design, Klinkenberg's work is very different from that of Cornelis Springer, for instance. His cityscapes are more historical and regal, with finer brushwork. Klinkenberg's work is more akin to the cityscapes of Jan Weissenbruch, in whose paintings we see bright light and strong shading; his work is ultimately more hushed in structure. Klinkenberg, however, developed a style all his own, characterised by bright sunlight and a predominantly light palette. He painted buildings in light, warm shades of brown and ochre, here and there accentuated with white, especially visible in this lot on the snow-covered quays of the Oude Gracht. Architecture often stands out against a brilliant blue sky, in this painting we see a more clear, winter sky. Water often plays an important role in his compositions; here the painter has rendered the reflection in the canal with a smooth, impressionistic touch. Figures are always of secondary importance in Klinkenberg's work. Furthermore, he hardly ever dated his work. In December 1924, in the rooms of the Pulchri Studio painting society in The Hague, the artistic legacy - no fewer than 269 lots of paintings, watercolours and oil sketches - of the artist Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg, who died on 23 April that year, was auctioned. This auction was a posthumous tribute by the many private collectors and art dealers to this painter of sunny cityscapes between 1880 and 1920. 'Oude Gracht', now on offer at Venduehuis Auctioneers The Hague, was one of the works on offer.

The City Gate, Possibly Delft Signed lower right Oil on canvas, 33.7 x 69.6 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg began as a painter of landscapes and historical subjects. However, from his mid-twenties onwards, he turned to painting cityscapes and town-scenes. This change of subject absolutely paid off; he developed a unique style and became a leading artist in this genre. Cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Alkmaar and Delft have all been immortalized by Klinkenberg many times over. His works therefore offer a beautiful representation of Dutch cities in the 1900s before the industrial revolution and urbanization. Contemporaries admired his use of sunlight; the way he could make a façade of sandstones or red bricks glisten, as can also be seen in this painting. KLINKENBERG, KAREL JOHANNES CHRISTIAAN Den Haag 1852 - 1924 Title: Amsterdam View. View over the Singel to the Ronde Lutherse Kerk (?). Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 51 x 70cm. Notation: Signed lower right: Klinkenberg. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Verso: On the frame label of the International Art Exhibition Munich 1892, No. 1275. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. The tradition of Klinkenberg is unmistakable in this view of Amsterdam; as a pupil of Christoffel Bisschop, he is associated with Dutch Romantic realism. But especially in contrast to Willem Koekkoek, for example, he depicts less the topography than the mood - a development towards Impressionism that is also evident in this hazy winter scene.

Please compare to a work with a similar composition in: Willem Laanstra, 'Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg (1852-1924)', Laren 2000, p. 171, ill. no. 0/52-2. A brilliant piece of work: A view of the Oudezijds Kolk with the Oude Kerk in the distance, Amsterdam. Karel Klinkenberg was born in The Hague in 1852 where, at the age of 14, having studied at the Hague’s Art Academy, he initially received lessons from Louis Meyer, the romantic marine artist. Within the year, Meyer left The Hague to live in Utrecht and Klinkenberg then came under the tutelage of Christoffel Bisschop. Through this painter, known for his paintings of interiors and historical pieces, Klinkenberg learnt how to work with contrasts of light and dark, and also how to use thick, impasto-like paint. In 1875, Klinkenberg sold his first major piece, ‘Het beleg van Leiden’ (The Siege of Leiden) at the Living Masters exhibition in Amsterdam. A year later, at the Living Masters exhibition in The Hague, his painting ‘De Korte Vijverberg’ was sold for 1,200 guilders. Klinkenbergs’ name as a successful artist was now established. Klinkenberg’s fellow painters, the painters from his own generation, known as the Schilders van Tachtig (Painters from the Eighties), weren’t always positive in their assessments of his work. For the avant-garde of the time, Willem Kloos’s famous adage prevailed: ‘Art is Passion’. And Eduard Karsen interpreted this notion of l’art pour l’art in an even stronger way: ‘he who works for honour or money, is not an artist’. Well, Karel Klinkenberg had no shortage of customers who paid well; he received twice as much for his work as Witsen and Karsen, and just as much as Breitner. So therefore, in the eyes of most Eighties Painters and art critics, Klinkenberg may not have been artistic enough and was considered far too focussed on selling his paintings, but he has never failed to gain the appreciation of art collectors, both at home and abroad. Klinkenberg lived and worked for most of his life in The Hague, but from November 1887 to April 1893 he lived in Amsterdam, the city with its historical city centre and reflective canals, which provided the inspiration for some of his best works. According to the book, ‘Schilders van Tachtig’ (Painters from the Eighties), Klinkenberg is considered to be a representative of the Amsterdam School, even if it is ‘in a more conservative way’. This Amsterdam School, which A.M. Hammacher called ‘urban impressionism’, followed up on the ‘nature impressionism’ of the Hague School, where the landscape and the interior set the tone. G.H. Marius, the writer of the book: ‘De Hollandsche Schilderkunst in de negentiende eeuw’ (Dutch Painting of the Nineteenth Century), published in 1903, compares Klinkenberg - ‘the deceptive portrayer of sunlight on houses’ - to Springer, with whom Klinkenberg ‘has topographic correctness in common, but then with less colour and the composition has not been thought through as well’. Marius goes on to write about Klinkenberg as: ‘the painter who you would expect to have chosen the magnificent Jan Weissenbruch, with his beautiful, talented facture, as his guide’. Klinkenberg’s cityscapes can rival the best works of Cornelis Springer. In its concept and design, Klinkenberg’s work is very different to Springer’s. Springer’s cityscapes are more historical and regal, with finer brushwork and often structured with diagonal rows of house fronts. Klinkenburg is more akin to Weissenbruch’s cityscapes, which are characterised by the strong, horizontal and vertical lines of the house fronts and rooftops, often combined with clear light and strong shadowing. Klinkenberg particularly excels in portraying sunlight, often reflected on the canals. In contrast to Weissenbruch’s tranquil and well-balanced cityscapes, Klinkenberg’s cityscapes simply vibrate. With warmth and with freshness, his best works vibrate with life. The cityscape on offer is drawn from life in a rich, multi-faceted, well-balanced and yet still lively composition, through the brilliance of the sunlight and through just the right number of people in view.
