KLINKERT (1905-1995) SIZE: 22 1/2 x 37 1/4 in./57.2 x 94.5 cm PRINTER: Drukkerij Kotting, Amsterdam DESCRIPTION: While the relationship between Carl Klinkert and the owner of this dance studio, Cornelis (Cor) Klinkert, is unclear, there is definitely an interesting story here. Cor started out as a tobacco dealer, joined the military in 1918, and then somehow fell in love with dance, which led him to opening his own studio. As a competing dancer himself, he was quite dedicated to the art, and nourished the growth and elevation of dance around the Netherlands. But he was also tactless: he was a member of the National Socialist Movement, and his studio was in an area populated by Jews, who were none too happy when Klinkert supported the restructuring of dance schools. After the war, he opened a new studio in Rotterdam, but in 1968, penance was served, in a way. Two men known for the Kralingse Bosmoorden—the brutal murder of two gay men—attacked Klinkert and locked him in a cupboard. He did manage to escape and get to a hospital, but we presume he then met his fate. (Art Deco; Dance; Jewish Interest)
