Michail Konstantinovic Klodt Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter

MIKHAIL KLODT (b 1832, d 1902) Russian Landscape Painter. Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt was the uncontested master of 19th-century Russian landscape painting. Klodt was born into an already-famous family of Barons Von Jurgensburg, an art dynasty that included his father, a noted engraver, as well as an uncle and cousin, an accomplished sculptor and painter, respectively. A scholarly work by F.I. Bulgakov (1890) noted that Klodt won the First Order Gold Medal at the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1858 for his painting "View of the Estate of Zegevald", now known as "Riverside Farmstead." At the Academy, he also received the title of Artist of the First Degree while studying under Vorobiov. Along with the title came pension money he used to travel in Europe and make a name for himself through exhibitions and commissions that would insure his fame and place in Russian art history.
Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt would return from his tour of Europe and become a professor at the Imperial Academy, but he never left his roots, traveling throughout the provinces creating beautiful works depicting the landscapes of Russia. While he tutored future Russian artists such as Dubovskoy and Bashinjagyan, among many others, his wanderlust and independent spirit led him to be one of the founders in 1868 of the famous Society of Traveling Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki) Group, appropriately known as the Wanderers. Formed in response to the Academy's repression of genre painting in favor of instruction in Italian historical works instead, the group's influence spread like wildfire throughout the Russian art community, sparking a new acceptance of genre painting in the face of opposition from the Academy.
The Wanderers group would in time include the great Russian artists Shishkin, Repin, Makovsky and Bogdonav-Belskii, with many others to follow. After the first Wanderers exhibition in 1871 the genre took hold, with many works being acquired by collectors such as Pavel Tretyakov, who assembled the remarkable collection that is now the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Inevitably the Academy adopted the ideology of the Wanderers, which unfortunately led to the stifling of creativity in late-19th-century Russian art and resulted in a split among the group's members, partly due to Klodt's refusal to relinquish his professorship at the Academy.
While he would occasionally exhibit with the group, Klodt retired from his professorship at the Academy and died in 1902, much revered by the Russian people. A striking picture of the artist painted by Ivan Nikolaevich Kromskoy is prominently displayed in Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery. Mikhail K. Klodt v. Jürgensburg, attr., Landscape, around 1870

      Est: €24,000 - €30,000

Oil on canvas Russia, around 1870 Attributed to Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt von Jürgensburg (1832/33-1902) - Russian landscape painter and member of the Peredvizhniki Traces of an old label verso on the stretcher Dimensions: 40.5 x 58 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany); bought by the father of the owner in Kiev around 1930 Mikhail Klodt von Jürgensburg was a main representative of Russian realist artists; the auction record for one of his large-scale river landscapes currently sets at around €900.000 Since 1863, Mikhail Klodt von Jürgensburg was mainly focused on Russian landscapes and created beautiful poetic compositions which are now regarded as classic realist paintings in Russian art. The present piece has been attributed to the artist and depicts a pastoral river scene with a grove in the distance and the blue sky rising above the deep horizon. As often seen in paintings by Mikhail Klodt, the present work also reveals the presence of human being in shape of two staffage figures sitting at the side of the river. Altogether, the painting captivates through the excellent technical execution and its fresh colors. The painting shows traces of an old label on the verso side of the stretcher. The work is in good overall condition considering the age; the paint surface has been cleaned and therefore reveals fresh colors, especially in the parts of the sky. The frame is also well preserved and measures 57 x 76 cm. The size of the stretcher is 40.5 x 58 cm. Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt von Jürgensburg (1832/33-1902) Born in Saint Petersburg, Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt von Jürgensburg grew up in a noble family of Baltic-German decent (known as Clodt von Jürgensburg). Between 1851 and 1858, he studied painting at the local Art Academy. His talent was quickly identified, so that he was sent as a fellow to Switzerland and France. In 1861, Mikhail Klodt was appointed member of the Academy in Saint Petersburg. After an extensive journey through Russia, the artist attended the Peredvizhniki (English: The Wanderers) in 1870. Three years later, in 1973, Mikhail Klodt was finally selected to become a professor at the Saint Petersburg Academy. His lyric landscape compositions deeply influenced the development of Russian art and may be found, for instance, in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum. Provenance: Originally from the collection of the Russian patron of the arts, Ivan Lesnikov, St. Petersburg,1871-1872. Private collection, Europe. Authenticity has been confirmed by Vladimir Petrov. Authenticity certificate from the State Institute of Grabar, experts A. Kiseleva and T. Goryacheva. Exhibited: 1st Exhibition of the Itinerants, St. Petersburg-Moscow-Kiev-Kharkov, 1871-1872, plate 1-35. Literature: Index of the 1st Exhibition of the Itinerants, St. Petersburg, 1871, p. 3, No. 23. G. Romanov, Encyclopedia of the Itinerants' Exhibitions 1871-1923, St. Petersburg, 2003, p. 8, 1-35. View of Kiev from the Muraviev Gardens presented here for the auctionis one of the finest works ever painted by Klodt. Createdspecifically for the First Exhibition of the Society of the Itinerants, ofwhich Klodt was one of the five founding members, it was particularlydear and important for the artist. A leading landscape painter of the second half of the nineteenthcentury, Klodt was one of the first Russian artists to combinegenre pictures with epic landscapes. He was born into theKlodt family, which was famous for its artistic talents, and receivedan excellent education (initially from Ivan Khrutsky at theMining Cadet Corps, and then at the Academy of Arts in thelandscape painting class of Maksim Vorobiev). He spent time inFrance and Switzerland as a pensioner, but after only one yearabroad he asked permission to return home in order to 'employthe remainder of my time as a "pensioner" painting scenes fromlife throughout Russia'. The Board of the Academy heeded theartist's request, and Klodt returned to his homeland in 1861. Hetravelled a great deal over the next ten years, preferring to workon subdued views of central Russia and steadily strengtheningthe authenticity of life and national colour in his initially somewhatidyllic compositions. In 1870 Klodt became one of the most active organisers of theSociety of the Itinerants (or Travelling) Exhibitions. He was not onlyone of the artists who signed the request to the Minister of InternalAffairs to permit the Society to be set up, but also one of the fivepeople, along with Kramskoy, Perov, Miasoyedov and Ge, whoformed its administration. It was during this period that he createdhis finest canvases. Having become a life-long genuine and consistentadherent to the ideas of the Society, Klodt naturally prepared thoroughlyfor the first exhibition. This took place in 1871 and Klodt wasrepresented at it by two works, Midday and View of Kiev from theMuraviev Gardens. Critics of the time commented: "The best landscapesat the Itinerants (or Travellers', Peredvizhniki) Exhibition areby Professor Baron Mikhail Klodt and Mr Savrasov', who was showinghis painting The Rooks Have Returned at the exhibition. The view that Klodt depicted in his painting, Andreyevsky Hill withits five-domed baroque Church of St Andrew, built between 1749and 1754 to a commission from Empress Elizabeth and designed bythe great architect Rastrelli, was indeed one of the most picturesquein Kiev. It is seen from the garden of Andrey NikolayevichMuraviev, a well-known church historian and religious writer. In1854 Muraviev decided to move permanently from St Petersburg toKiev and he purchased a hilly wasteland near the Church ofSt Andrew; he ordered it to be cleared, a garden to be laid out anda wooden cottage to be built initially. However, the writer onlymoved in when he retired in 1866, and by this time a sturdy househad already been built in his garden in Kiev. Empress MariaAlexandrovna visited the Ukraine in 1869, and Muraviev accompaniedher to the "holy places of Kiev". The empress's entourageincluded the poet Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev, and soon after hisdeparture he wrote the famous lines dedicated to Muraviev s beautifulgarden and its owner; they accurately describe the romanticisedpanorama that Klodt depicted. "There, high on a precipice, the ethereal, shining church rearsup and amazes the eyes as it seems to float towards the heavens. This is where St Andrew's cross shines even to this day, glisteningin Kiev's sky, a holy guardian of this place. Your dwellingplacebows reverentially at its feet, and now you live there, noidle inhabitant, in the evening of your days."

Clodt also signed lower left: Clodt PROVENANCE: Sotheby's London - Russian Pictures, Works of Art, and Faberge - 20 February 1985, lot 225 LITERATURE: Nashi Khudozhniki, F. I. Bulgakov, Saint Petersburg, 1890. Zabitiyie Imena Russkaya Zhivopis XIX Veka, Alexander Shestimirov, Moscow, 2001, page 129. Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt was the uncontested master of 19th-century Russian landscape painting. A scholarly work by F.I. Bulgakov (1890) noted that this very picture won him the First Order Gold Medal at the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1858, where he also received the title of Artist of the First Degree while studying under Vorobiov. Along with it came pension money he used to travel in Europe and make a name for himself through exhibitions and commissions that would insure his fame and place in Russian art history. While Bulgakov titled the picture View on Vallum, its original title was View of the Estate of Zegevald, and it is now known as Riverside Farmstead. It was destined to be his greatest work, a painting that changed the face of the Russian art world. Klodt was born into an already-famous family of Barons Von Jurgensburg, an art dynasty that included his father, a noted engraver, as well as an uncle and cousin, an accomplished sculptor and painter, respectively. Mikhail was born in the town of Zegevald, a small town 60 miles from the city of Riga as Klodt saw fit to note in his own hand on the reverse of this painting. Indeed, Riverside Farmstead is an homage to his place of birth, the Latvian town also known as Sigulda. In this masterpiece Klodt has captured the serenity of the pastoral scene in magnificent detail. Even without Klodt's handwritten notations on the back of the canvas, there is no mistaking the location. The ruins of the 13th-century Sigulda castle high above the Gauja River valley is one of the most celebrated locations in Latvia, and Klodt has majestically placed the ruin in the upper left of the picture. Significantly, it was his submission of Riverside Farmstead as his graduation work in 1858 that influenced Klodt's early leadership role in the movement, which had its roots in the renaissance of Russian genre painting.
