GUSTAV KLUTSIS (1895-1938). [POLITBURO]. Photocollage maquette with mixed media. 1935. Sheet - 14½x34½ inches, 36¾x87½ cm. Design - 13

        Est: $7,000 - $10,000

GUSTAV KLUTSIS (1895-1938) [POLITBURO]. Photocollage maquette with mixed media. 1935. Sheet - 14 1/2x34 1/2 inches, 36 3/4x87 1/2 cm. Design - 13 1/2x21 3/4 inches, 34 1/4x55 1/4 cm. Condition A-: minor skinning where Klutsis "self-censored" and removed photo-portraits; tears, creases and pin holes at folded edges of sheet, not affecting image; hand-signed and dated by the artist in pencil. Paper. This multimedia collage features a portrait of Stalin, backed by a statue of Lenin, with smaller portraits of Politburo members on either side. Klutsis utilizes a composition reminiscent of traditional Russian iconography to illustrate this executive policy-making committee of the Bolshevik party. We can surmise that the removed upper row of portraits was a result of Klutsis' self-censorship, "perhaps in fear of being accused of supporting the 'people's enemies' . . . The empty ovals [in another study for this portrait] reserved for the heads of the tyrant's servants, were subject to perpetual replacement. At this point, Klutsis' role as a photomontage artist was fully controlled by the government, and his compositional choices began to equal life-and-death decisions" ( The Soviet Photograph, 1924-1937, by Margarita Tupitsyn). This study is similar in composition to Klutsis' finished poster Politburo TsK VKP(B) of this same year (See V&A E.1267-1989), though that printed poster resulted in a different layout of the portraits. Other photomontages of the Politburo feature blacked-out or cut-out portraits, in an attempt to keep up with the changing roster of dissenters.

Condition B: extensive overpainting over replaced losses in margins and central image; water staining at top and bottom, affecting image and text; repaired tears, creases and abrasions in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Mounted on Japan. "The purpose of the union is: the overthrow of the bourgeoisie, the rule of the proletariat, the destruction of the old, resting on the class opposites of bourgeois society, and the creation of a new society without classes and private property. K. Marx." Born in Latvia, Klutsis studied at the influential Svomas/Vkhutemas art school under Malevich and Pevsner, and then went on to become a founding member of "October," a group of artists dedicated to serving the needs of the proletariat throughout the USSR. Klutsis became the Soviet Union's most prolific photomontage virtuoso, designing emblematic posters to inspire the Communist cause throughout the 1920s and 1930s. In 1938, despite his exceptional work for the cause, Stalin had Klutsis arrested and executed along with other Latvian. Rare. We have found no other examples at auction. Klutsis / Kulagina p. 64.

LOT NOTES The following theater program was prepared for the 1930 German tour of the legendary theater company founded by Vsevolod Meyerhold (Russian 1874-1940). Million Workers. 1930.

        Est: $10,000 - $12,000

ARTIST: GUSTAV G. KLUTSIS (1895-1938) SIZE: 28 7/8 x 41 3/8 in./73.4 x 105 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: "A Latvian subject of the Russian empire, Gustav Klutsis came to Russia proper during the 1917 Revolution as part of a volunteer machine-gunner unit that helped to topple the czar and safeguard the new Soviet leaders, including Vladimir Lenin. Klutsis had studied painting at home and continued in art schools during and after his military service, ending up at the radically progressive Higher State Artistic and Technical Workshops (VKhUTEMAS)—the cradle of Constructivism. By the early 1920s, Klutsis had worked his way through the rigorous exploration of elemental shapes and basic materials called for by that movement and began to put the Constructivist ethos of honesty and utility to use in agitational propaganda... Klutsis brought photomontage to its peak of expression in posters from 1930 and after that blended workers’ bodies (in some cases his own) and their machines with the heads of leaders of the Soviet state to forge a collective juggernaut for modernization. These posters, printed in the tens of thousands, helped transform the Soviet visual landscape in the early Stalinist era. Nevertheless, Klutsis was killed along with scores of other Latvians on Stalin’s orders during purges later in the decade" (Art Institute of Chicago). The text here reads, "With the efforts of millions of workers involved in the socialist competition, we will convert the five-year plan into a four-year plan." Rare! (Russian; Propaganda)

        Development of Transport. 1929.

        Est: $12,000 - $15,000

ARTIST: GUSTAV G. KLUTSIS (1895-1944) SIZE: 20 x 28 3/4 in./50.6 x 73 cm PRINTER: State Publishers, Moscow DESCRIPTION: The First Five-Year Plan of Russia was a list of economic goals decreed by Joseph Stalin to strengthen the USSR's economy between 1928 and 1932, making the nation both militarily and industrially self-sufficient. The fine photomontage locomotives used in this Klutsis design focus on the “Development of Transport – One of the Most Serious Tasks in Fulfilling the Five-Year Plan.” Not only are the actual numbers of first-year achievements listed on the poster, but also projections for the following year in the areas of capital investment, basic funding and railroad freight turnover. One of the members of the Russian Constructivist movement, Latvia-born Klutsis joined the Soviet avant-garde in the early years of the Bolshevik regime. He “continued to produce posters well into the Stalinist period, using photography and montage, and also maintaining many of the constructivist design principles. Sometimes . . . he took the photograph himself, using documentary photographs which he montaged, or photographs with an angled view . . . Klutsis usually succeeds in avoiding the potentially idealized, sentimental or utopian nature of this gaze as it tended to be used in the realism of the 30s, by introducing an element of confrontation . . . or shock, which depends essentially upon montage” (Avant-Garde, p. 56). Like many of his colleagues, he was betrayed by the system, imprisoned in 1938 and eventually died in a forced-labor camp. Rare! (Russian Avant-Garde; Rail)

Condition B: restored losses, repaired tears, creases, abrasions and restoration in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds and seam. Two-sheets. Framed. Klutsis himself explained that "new social challenges, the class struggle, construction projects, socialist colossi - all required a new approach to design, at once objective and documentary. A new art was needed, armed by technology and chemistry, an art that stood side by side with socialist industry, a new, militant art, which could organize the will of the masses and direct the activities of the working class along planned lines (the five-year plans)" (Clash of Ideologies p. 100). One of Klutsis'' favorite recurring motifs, to convey an irresistible impression of strength and movement, was a row of three or four people marching side-by-side, carrying their tools, weapons or flags. Often Klutsis and his wife Valentina Kulagina used photographs of themselves in marching poses as preparatory studies for these posters. Klutsis / Strasbourg p. 113.
