University of Manitoba Press, Winnipeg, 1999, page 4.Time is as much an element of the paintings of Harold Klunder (b.1943) as subject or medium. While his watercolours are completed quickly, his oil paintings are often done over a number of years and in this way his own lived experience and changing sensibilities are contained in the work. Towing the line between figurative imagery, abstraction and expressionism, over his extensive career, Klunder has seen many modes, trends and iterations of abstraction come and go. Since the duration of time is so critical to his artistic practice, a single painting can illustrate a multitude of aesthetic changes, ultimately making his work so compelling and challenging to categorise. Klunder has said that "I am influenced by everything; what I find on the street, what I see in stores, on TV, etc. I love the look of things and what the look hides. I love the idiosyncratic, the boring, banal everyday stuff, the things that fill our every moment, moment-to-moment...everything at once all the time..." His fascination with the ephemeral is captured through his own particular abstracted lens, paradoxically cementing this brevity in a dynamic but ultimately fixed image on the canvas. Everything has to end at some point, and what we see in Klunder’s paintings is the recognition, confrontation and ultimate concession to the indiscriminate passage of time.Estimate: $6,000–8,000

HAROLD KLUNDER, R.C.A.SAINT JEROME IN PENITENCE (SELF PORTRAIT #II)oil on canvas, unframedsigned and dated ‘87; also signed, titled and dated “1986-1987” on the reverse 60 ins x 60 ins; 152.4 cms x 152.4 cms Provenance:The Sable-Castelli Gallery Limited, TorontoPrivate Collection, TorontoHarold Klunder (b. 1943) immigrated to Canada from The Netherlands with his family in 1952. After studying art at Central Technical School in Toronto, he worked as a commercial artist for six years, becoming a full-time painter in 1970. His distinctive style evolved through the late 1970s (his first commercial show was held at Jared Sable’s gallery in 1976) and early 1980s into large, thickly painted works that often took several years to complete. Through the work—abstract, and executed in oils—Klunder explores the oil medium and its history; he makes reference to historical art, but updates and personalizes the subjects by inserting himself into the paintings. Many, like this Saint Jerome in Penitence, are subtitled “self portrait” and assigned a number. These are not conventional self portraits, as they reveal the artist’s inner life. And while Klunder’s work from the 1980s may resemble the work of contemporary Neo-expressionist painters in the references to historical art, in the use of the figure and thickly applied paint, it is not the result of post-modern theorizing. This work from 1987, depicting Saint Jerome in Penitence, or Self Portrait #11, is informed by earlier depictions of Jerome, a saint and doctor (teacher) of the Catholic Church, dating back to the early Renaissance in Europe. Traditionally, the saint is pictured as a hermit, having cast off his rich red garments, and lives in a desolate landscape where he practices mortification of the flesh. (he is often shown holding a rock). Typically, he is surrounded by other attributes: a book, lion, crucifix and dead tree.Klunder adopted some of the established iconography for this episode in the saint’s life. The large figure of the saint/artist walks towards the picture plane, on a long road that extends back to the horizon at an angle cutting across the lower three-quarters of the composition. He is naked, exposed, a red robe over one shoulder. The head, richly coloured and textured, is a self portrait: Klunder has become the penitent Jerome. This puts into question the desert landscape to his right, populated by an ascetic figure and a bird. Is this an extension of the saint/artist’s space, or is it a canvas on which he is working? A number of small pools of colour are arrayed along the lower edge of the work, with what appears to be a paintbrush standing in the lower left corner. Is this a picture of the artist as Saint Jerome, or of the artist in his studio, painting a picture of Saint Jerome? Or have the two concepts been conflated to read as a representation of Klunder’s personal struggle with his art?Estimate: $20,000–30,000

James D. Campbell, "Harold Klunder," (exhibition review), Magenta Magazine, Montreal, 2014. John Marsonet, The Artist Life-Harold Klunder, a Program Documentary Series for Bravo Television, 2013.Note:Born in the Netherlands in 1946, Harold Klunder emigrated to Toronto in 1952. Based in Montreal, Klunder's colourful impasto and abstract paintings have received critical acclaim in Canada and abroad.Self-portraiture is characteristic of Klunder's work. With nearly all images beginning as figurative drawings, they morph, extend, transform and distort as the painting takes shape. Sometimes spending up to ten years on any given painting, Klunder's rigorous and personalized approach equally echoes and allows for the changing nature of personality and the unconscious mind to unfold. His paintings seem to embody a spirit of metamorphosis, with the curvilinear and highly abstract patterns suggestive of the untamed and dissonant thoughts that often occupy and threaten to overwhelm one's daily existence. Initially influenced by the Dutch tradition of abstract expressionism, Klunder actively carved his own path away from this modernist aesthetic, creating his own individualized style rooted in his adopted Canadian identity. Working with large scale pieces allows Klunder to assert a sense of physicality, which imbues his paintings with a kind of mind-body connection, making them come alive to both artist and viewer alike. Describing his work as "everything is significant and nothing is significant," Klunder's use of oil paint, given the postmodern fascination with alternate media such as digital photography, is certainly significant. His piece Of Mind and Matter, Day and Night, painted between 2005 and 2007, is demonstrative of his dedication to oil painting. Klunder takes chances not only in his choice of medium but also in revealing part of his internal self on the canvas. The rich and thickly applied red hues are offset by touches of contrasting blue, black and yellow; this diptych illustrates his differing experience of day and night. During the day, thoughts are seemingly entangled with the world around him, pictured in the jumble of lines and shapes that comprise his representation. At night, a more figurative image is presented, hinting that after dark there is more opportunity for solitary reflection and a return to the self (whatever that may be). The title Of Mind and Matter, suggests that rather than a dominance of one over the other, both entities constitute his being. Recalling that Klunder painted this over a two year period, the heavily applied layers of paint illustrate the vagaries of his experiences throughout this time.

He studied art at Central Technical School in Toronto under Doris McCarthy, Charles Goldhammer and Virginia Luz. Klunder developed a diverse practice, working across a range of media including painting, photography, printmaking and performance. When assessing the pervading influences on Klunder's artwork, scholars often allude to other artists of Dutch heritage such as Willem de Kooning and Karel Appel. Yet Klunder himself defies rigid comparisons. He paints according to feeling: creating charged surfaces intuitively and freely - removing himself from the formal aspects of painting.Through Klunder's process, texture amasses in abundance. The sculptural forms created by his thick impastos carry as much life as the subject matter of the works themselves. Heavy paint pulsates with a buoyancy of colour. These are not works resulting from a quick slather; these are works that accumulate momentously, like geological formations.Klunder's paintings give a taste of the surreal despite being rooted firmly in real life. They are bohemian, musical and abstract, chunky. In recent years, Klunder has increasingly explored self-portraiture of which this lot, The Geometry of Pain (Self Portrait I), 1989, is an example. Paralleling the process of personal development - which happens slowly, cumulatively, and over many years - Klunder works on a single painting for years at a time. The canvases gestate, forming over a duration as vivid and living, weighty with the human experience.
