Knapp is well known for his quintessential depictions of farm life along the rivers and shorelines of America from New Hampshire to upper state New York. "View of the Susquehanna River" was painted between 1860-1870 in Pennsylvania farm country, where cattle drank along rivers and farmers piled hay on wagons to feed animals. This canvas is a major example painted during the peak of the Hudson River School tradition. Knapp was born in Philadelphia in 1823 and he died in that city in 1900. He first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1859, at which time his address is listed as New York City. In 1878 he exhibited two New Hampshire views at the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics Association in Boston, many views at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1877-1887) and most recently his canvases of Ellsworth Brook in West Campton, NH, the Entrance to Franconia Knotch, Silver Lake near Mount Chocorua, the Peabody River in Mount Washington, Saco and Kearsarge and the White Mountains from Androscoggin Valley were listed in New Hampshire Scenery (C.H. Campbell, NH Historical Society, Phoenix Publishing1985). His paintings are in many relevant private collections and at the New Hampshire Historical Society, Dartmouth College Art Galleries and elsewhere. He is considered a leading White Mountains painter, but he spent many years in and around Philadelphia and the Susquehanna River painting landscapes from life. He also painted Narragansett Bay (RI), the Pocanos, the Catskills, the Delaware Water Gap and along the New Jersey Shore. Knapp's son Charles R. was a watercolorist.

      Jun. 06, 2022

CHARLES WILSON KNAPP (AMERICAN, 1823–1900) VIEW OF COLUMBIA AVENUE BRIDGE, FAIRMOUNT PARK, PHILADELPHIA

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Charles Wilson Knapp (American, 1823–1900) View of Columbia Avenue Bridge, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia Signed 'C W Knapp' bottom left; also with original preparer's label on upper stretcher verso, oil on canvas 8 x 12 in. (20.3 x 30.5cm) Excecuted circa 1876. Provenance Provenance Vose Galleries, Boston, Massachusetts. Acquired directly from the above on October 20, 1997 (as View with a Bridge, Philadelphia). Collection of Dr. Douglas S.Holsclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Note While the previous Lot focused on the main building of the 1876 Centennial Exposition, the present work depicts the nearby Columbia Avenue Bridge stretching over the Schuylkill river, which enabled the 10,000,000 visitors to access the exhibition site from Lancaster County. It is faitfully represented as the covered bridge of white pine and seven spans originally built in 1834, and serves as an important visual reminder of the rural state of the outskirts of Philadelphia then. A second bridge was erected in 1886 to carry the increasing freight traffic. The current bridge, officially called Columbia Railroad Bridge, dates from 1920 and is now a two train track concrete arch bridge. Frame: 13 3/4 x 17 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. The unlined canvas in overall good condition. Examination under UV light reveals a small repair on the bridge at center (with associated patch verso), to the left of the arch. With inpainting also visible in the sky at upper center and upper right corner. Pinpoint pigments appear purplish in the grass across the foreground: those do not to be restoration in our opinion. See specialist's pictures for more details.

      Jun. 06, 2022

CHARLES WILSON KNAPP (AMERICAN, 1823–1900) WORLD'S FAIR, FAIRMOUNT PARK, PHILADELPHIA

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Charles Wilson Knapp (American, 1823–1900) World's Fair, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia Signed 'C W Knapp' bottom left, oil on canvas 8 x 12 1/8 in. (20.3 x 30.8cm) Executed circa 1876. Provenance Vose Galleries, Boston, Massachusetts. Acquired directly from the above on October 20, 1997 (as World's Fair). Collection of Dr. Douglas S.Holsclaw, Jr., Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Note The present work and the following one commemorate Philadelphia's 1876 Centennial Exposition, the first official World's Fair to ever be held in the United States, and set to mark the 100th anniversary of the signature of the Declaration of Independence in the City of Brotherly Love. The large-scale event, which lasted from from May 10 to November 10, 1876, was held in Fairmount Park, along the Schuylkill River. The present work presents a large view of the Park from a high vantage point, and most certainly focuses on the Main Exhibition Building, conceived and built by architect Henry Pettit and engineer Joseph M. Wilson. Then considered to be the largest building in the world, it was ultimately demolished in 1881. The nearby Memorial Hall was preserved however, and now houses the Please Touch Museum. Frame: 13 5/8 x 17 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. The unlined canvas in excellent original condition with no apparent sign of restoration as seen under UV light.
