          Dec. 15, 2022

HILARY KNIGHT (1926) “Captain Boldheart - Gave the Word to Board.” (CHARLES DICKENS)

          Est: $2,000 - $3,000

HILARY KNIGHT (1926) "Captain Boldheart - Gave the Word to Board." Illustration for Captain Boldheart and the Magic Fishbone, Two Comedies by Charles Dickens with a preface by Mary McCarthy and illustrations by Knight (New York: Macmillan, 1964). Watercolor and ink on paper. 235x160 mm; 9 1/4x6 1/4 inches, image, on slightly larger sheet. Signed "Hilary Knight" in lower left image; matted and framed to 13 1/2x10 1/4 inches, and with Knight's label on frame backing. The artist's copy of the first edition of the published book accompanies the artwork, his signed bookplate on front pastedown. Provenance: Bonhams, 2018; private collection, New York. "Captain Boldheart" and "The Magic Fishbone" were originally part of "Holiday Romance" (1868), the only juvenile fiction Charles Dickens published in his lifetime. In the 1960s, Macmillan editor Michael di Capua proposed the story to be included among a series of children's classics he was producing, with new illustrations by prominent artists and commentary by notable writers. It was delayed, however, because it took so long for author Mary McCarthy to submit her foreword. As scholar Michael Hearn has observed, this image, with its cartoon-like violence reflects, Rockwell Kent's 1928 illustrations depicting similar atrocities for Voltaire's Candide that fascinated Mr. Knight when he was a boy.

          Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Hilary Knight (American, b. 1926) Eloise with Valentine, calendar illustration, 2014 Watercolor, ink, and pencil on paper 14-1/2 x 10-1/2 inches (36.8 x 26.7 cm) (sheet) Signed and dated lower right: Hilary / Knight / 2014 PROVENANCE: The artist; Acquired by the present owner from the above. EXHIBITED: The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, Massachusetts, "The Carle Honors," 2015. "Eloise is a little girl who lives at The Plaza Hotel in New York (Thompson, 1955)." A simple beginning to Kay Thompson's endearing story that has swept the nation for generations. The children's classic continues to smash book sales records, and leads tourists in droves to the iconic hotel, for a glimpse of Eloise's forever home. With her precociously-too-big personality, or as Maurice Sendak described her, "that brazen loose-limbed delicious little-girl monster," Eloise has become synonymous with her creator, Hilary Knight (Salon, 1999). Hilary Knight was the son of two successful illustrators, (Ace Drummond comic) and (Winkle, Twinkle and Lollypop). Knight studied at the Art Students League in New York under George Grosz and Reginald Marsh. While the love story of New York is clear in the story of Eloise, so are the strong lines and the impression of uncontrollable movement that are clearly the influence of the artist's Ash Can mentors. Sixty-seven years after the first publication of Eloise, the public's love affair with the rambunctious Manhattanite living lavishly has not diminished. Even today, family's flock to The Plaza Hotel to have tea and stay in the iconic Eloise suite. A variation of the present work titled Sweet Heart is illustrated in the book The 365 Days of Eloise: My Book of Holidays by Knight and Kay Thompson. (Simon & Schuster, 2015) HID01801242017

Provenance: Bush Galleries. Hilary Knight, best known as the illustrator of Kay Thompson's Eloise books, has always been a great movie fan. He was delighted when he finally met character actress Margaret Hamilton, the Wicked Witch of the West; and he brought a publicity photo of her to sign. He later paid tribute in his wraparound mirror-image Halloween Cricket cover in 1983. The photo she autographed can be seen on the wall to the left of the vanity table in the bedroom.

Even today, family's flock to The Plaza Hotel to have tea and stay in the iconic Eloise suite. Heritage Auctions is thrilled to offer two depictions of Eloise by Hilary Knight. The first being an unpublished book cover for Eloise in Paris. Knight completed four potential covers for the book with Kay Thompson and the publisher making the final selection. In the present work, Eloise and her pets, Weenie and Skipperdee, sit upon her trunk gazing at a map of Paris with binoculars. The viewer can easily imagine Eloise enthusiastically and ingeniously plotting her day in Paris. In the second example, Knight expertly captures a sweet and brazen narrative in an exceedingly rare three-panel double-sided screen depicting messy-haired Eloise stretching over the balcony to sign The Plaza Hotel flag with her name. The addition of a mirror and shelf allows for viewers to literally place themselves with Eloise, joining in the raucous fun alongside Weenie and Skipperdee. After all, the greatest skill of a gifted illustrator is to pull us into the story. HID01801242017

HILARY KNIGHT "NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS" WATERCOLOR, INK, AND PENCIL ON ILLUSTRATION BOARD

          Est: -

Hilary Knight (Born 1926) "Night Before Christmas" Watercolor, Ink and Pencil on Illustration Board. Depicting a young boy and girl holding her cat, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Santa Clause to come down from a Mid-Century style chimney while standing underneath a mistletoe. Artist hand signed on the lower left corner, along the edge of the zebra rug. Also includes a tag on the reverse of the board inscribed "Hilary Knight / 300 East 51st Street / New York / 10022 / New York". Hilary Knight is an American writer-artist who is the illustrator of more than 50 books and the author of nine books. He is best known as the illustrator of Kay Thompson's Eloise (1955) and others in the Eloise series. Knight has illustrated for a wide variety of clients, creating artwork for magazines, children's fashion advertisements, greeting cards, record albums and posters for Broadway musicals, including Gypsy, Irene, Half A Sixpence, Hallelujah Baby! and No, No Nanette. The son of artist-writers Clayton Knight and Katharine Sturges, Hilary Knight was born on Long Island in Hempstead. His father illustrated aviation books, and his mother was a fashion and book illustrator. Living in Roslyn, New York as a child, Hilary was age six when he moved to Manhattan with his family, and has lived there ever since. After study with George Grosz and Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League, Knight labored as a ship painter while serving in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He painted murals in private homes and entered the field of magazine illustration, starting with Mademoiselle in 1952, followed by House & Garden, Gourmet, McCalls and Woman's Home Companion. His work as a humorous illustrator was strongly influenced by the British cartoonist Ronald Searle. The list of artists Knight admires includes Ludwig Bemelmans, Joseph Hirsch, Leo Lionni, Robert Vickrey and Garth Williams. Over decades, Knight maintained an apartment in midtown Manhattan which also serves as his studio and library, where he adds to his collection of books, sheet music, programs and soundtrack and cast recordings.
