Again and again artists perceived it as a major challenge to capture the liveliness and nature of an animal. Depending on the prevailing taste, epoch and artistic personality different objective were in the foreground. Thus Vienna Bronzes show a lifelike richness of detail, often iridescent colors and vibrant vitality in rendering fur or feathers. The English sculptor Jonathan Knight in contrast, dispenses entirely with details, favoring reduced forms. His emperor penguin appears no less alive, but also calm and serene. The smooth surface of the animal figure has a pleasant feel that tempts to touch. The sculpture has a cool, greenish patina that matches the habitat of the animal.
