Exhibited: Lubetkin Gallery, IA Biography from the Archives of askART: Robert Knipschild was born in 1927 in Freeport, Illinois. He studied at the University of Wisconsin and at Cranbrook Academy of Art where he worked under Zoltan Sepeshy. In 1950, at the age of twenty-three, his work was selected for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's widely acclaimed exhibition "American Painting Today." Since that time he has received wide recognition, with many one-man shows and several prizes in important competitive exhibitions. He has exhibited his work in such museums as the Boston Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Corcoran Museum, the De Young Museum in San Francisco, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati. Knipschild's work has been included in important surveys of American art including the annuals at the Whitney Museum, the Carnegie Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Butler Museum, and the Kansas City Museum. His work has also been exhibited in museums in Europe, Japan, and Australia. Knipschild's work is in the collections of important American museums such as the Hirshhorn Museum, the Sculpture Garden, the Corcoran Museum, the Phillips Gallery, the Baltimore Museum, the Library of Congress, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Cranbrook Museum, and the Illinois State Museum. You will also find his work in the collections of many colleges and universities throughout the country, such as the University of Cincinnati. Important private collections include those of Nelson Rockefeller; Henry Whiting of Birmingham, Michigan; Herbert Bayer of Aspen; Robert Owen Johnson of Glenview, Illinois; John Denman of Seattle; Donald S. Gilmore of Kalamazoo; Lawrence Heller of New York City; James Foster of Honolulu; Edith Gregor Halpert of New York City; Lawrence Fleischmann of Detroit; and W. Gibson of Melbourne, Australia. Robert Knipschild is listed in "Who's Who in America," "Who's Who in American Art," "Outstanding Educators of America," "National Register of Prominent Americans," and the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. Mr. Knipschild has taught throughout the United States and retired from the University of Cincinnati where he held the position of Professor of Fine Arts and Director of Graduate Studies in Art.
