Japan 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War: Comic Manga of political satire cartoon, original multi-colour woodblock print. Chinese Paper Tiger Defence Force in Port Arthur, Hurrah for Japan, 100 Victories, 100 Laughs Series, 1895, by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915). Depicts the figure of the Chinese soldier, looking formidable but is virtually a paper tiger & his mouth has already been smashed by a laughing Japanese soldier by a hoe. The embroidery of the Army's uniform supposed to be an aggressive animal (tiger?) has turned into a scared cat. The series is one of Kiyochika's most unusual works & acted as wartime propaganda to foster patriotism & encourage support for the war demonstrating Japan's superiority & might over its Chinese enemies. Kiyochika's satiric depictions poked fun at the Chinese & flaunted the new modernisation of Meiji era Japan as superior to the old ways of China. Ironically these images often paralleled the anti-oriental cartoons that Westerners were producing at the same time (approx 30x20cm). Average condition, has been trimmed.

Japan 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War: Comic Manga of political satiric cartoon, woodblock print. The Anti-Qing (China) Tampering Game, Hurrah for Japan, 100 Victories, 100 Laughs Series, 1895 by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915). It depicts the naval battle in Weihaiwei where the Chinese Navy suffered the final defeat in a form of children's tampering game. A typical example of the almost reflexive dehumanisation of the enemy found in many of war game. It shows the Chinese warship have legs & panically fleeing or sinking, while rag doll-like Chinese soldiers drown with their pigtail floating. Ironically these images often paralleled the anti-oriental cartoons that Westerners were producing at the same time (approx 36.5x25.5cm). Paper shows some aging, overall GC.

Japan. 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War: Comic Manga of political satiric cartoon original multi-colour woodblock print. The Loosing Lands from China Are Trust Like the Ring Toss Prizes to the Laughing Western Powers, Hurrah for Japan, 100 Victories, 100 Laughs Series, 1895 by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915). It analogises the loosing cities of China during the Sino-Japanese War (1894-45) to the prizes of the ring toss game. For instance 'bottle of Port Arthur (fell on 21 Nov 1894)', 'locker of Jinzhou (fell on 9 Nov)' & 'pillow of Dalian (fell on 10 Nov)' etc. The Chinese owner of the ring toss game is bowing & begging the laughing Westerner to play & the prizes are tucked in the space & all up for grasp. Ironically these images often paralleled the anti-oriental cartoons that Westerners were producing at the same time (approx 34.2x24.2cm). Left edge stains & slight thin o/w GC.

Japan 1894-95 Sino-Japanese Ukiyo-e original multicolour woodblock print triptych, ' Great Victory of Our Troops in the Yellow Sea (Yalus River)', 17 Sep 1894, by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915). This is the signature painting of this significant martime battle & serves as the cover photo of Wikepedia profile (attached in this lot). On the left Admiral Court Kabayama Sukenori, the Chief of Naval Staff (later became the 1st Governor-General (his information from Wikepedia also included in this lot), positioned on Saikyo Maru, a merchant turned warship, organising the attack on the Chinese Fleet. In the centre the Japanese soldiers are firing the cannon. From the far end the Japanese & Chinese Fleets are fiercely engaged. The sky shows the firing like fireworks. Notably the painting shows the Chinese warship Jingyuan sunk while Dingyuan caught fire. The wole painting depicts 7 warships from both sides, they are Saikyo Maru, Akisushima, Itsukushima & Fuso from Japanese side, Dingyan, Zhiyuan & Zhiyuan from the Chinese side (approx 37x76cm). Wide borders a little aged, prints bright & clean. A similar woodblock was part of a lot sold by Christie's for US$2160 (A$3300, est US$1000-$1500). Sales record included.

Japan 1894-95 Sino-Japanese Ukiyo-e original woodblock print triptych, 'Our Elite Forces Capturing the Pescadores Islands in Taiwan', c1895 by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) depicting a mirror image of the battle at night with silhouettes of Japanese figures on the right & the retreating Chinese on the west (35.3x70.4cm). Very impressive design. Painter No 7 directly depicted the battle above the ground at dark but through the reflection on the water. You can identify the pigtails of the fleeing Chinese soldiers through the water reflection. A simlar copy sold by Merrill's Auctioneers & Appraisers 5th May 2023, Lot 94, for US$1300 (A$1988, est US$300-600). Very scarce.
