LOT NOTES Nikolai Kochergin was a Russian (Soviet) avant-garde painter, graphic artist, and sculptor mainly active in Leningrad. Born near Moscow, Kochergin studied at the Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry in 1908-1918. In 1918 he volunteered for the Red Army and began making agitprop posters, as well as designing magazines and newspapers, such as "Krasnaya panorama", "Ogonyok", "Vokrug sveta", and "Mir priklucheniy". He continued creating agitprop posters during the Second World War, particularly for "OKNA TASS" ("TASS Windows"). In the late 1940s, Kochergin took up large-scale Social Realist paintings and illustrations for children`s books and magazines, which he would continue to do until his death in 1974. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

        Jun. 29, 2014

KOCHERGIN, N. Economic Devastation and the Army of Labor, 1920

        Est: $600 - $900

Razrukha i Armiya Truda [Economic Devastation and the Army of Labor], a poster by Nikolai Kochergin (1897-1974, Meritorious Artist of the Russian Federation), with text by Dem’yan Bedny. Published by GIZ, Moscow, 1920. 53 x 71 cm.This poster expresses the general belief that the economic devastation threatening the survival of the young Republic will be overcome by the forces of Free Labor. In practical terms, it may have been prompted by a decree of the Military Council proclaiming that the Third Army would be reassigned from military to labor duties, and renaming it the First Army of Labor. The Labor Army’s principal tasks, as set by the decree, were to secure provisions for workers in critical sectors of economy, to organize the collection and delivery of fuel, and to ?mobilize necessary working power on a national scale”. Skilled workers not indispensable to the life of Army itself were sent to work at factories and mines placed under the control of the newly formed Labor Army Council. • KOCHERGIN, N. British Peacemakers, 1920
        Jun. 29, 2014

        KOCHERGIN, N. British Peacemakers, 1920

        Est: $800 - $1,200

Angliiskie mirotvortsy [British Peacemakers], a poster by Nikolai Kochergin (1897-1974, Meritorious Artist of the Russian Federation). Published by GIZ, Moscow, 1920. 68 x 50 cm. A poster of the Russo-Polish War period mocking the July 1920 British demarche calling on the Soviets to halt their offensive against Poland at the former 1793 borders, and threatening to assist Poland “with all means available” in case of Soviet refusal. British demands were brushed off by the Soviet side, which felt it had the Polish army on the run, and that British public opinion would prevent the Conservative Government from getting involved in yet another military conflict. Stephen White, in The Bolshevik Poster, offered great praise for the artist: “Perhaps only one other artist deserves attention in the same context as Moor and Deni: Nikolai Kochergin, a rather younger artist whose work must nonetheless be ranked among the most effective and influential, as well as aesthetically satisfying, of the entire Civil War period”. While many of Kochergin’s posters of the period enjoyed unheard-of runs of up to 75,000 and even 90,000 copies, the young artist showed little interest in converting his newfound popularity into a permanent position in Moscow. The end of 1920 found him in the Caucasus, where he became the chief artist of the regional ROSTA bureau. Eventually, he settled in Leningrad. Kochergin’s successful career as a posterist and book illustrator spanned a period of over fifty years.
