WALTER KOCH (1910-1943) German commander of the Fallschirmjager, the paratrooper division of the Luftwaffe, who received the Iron Cross award for his actions during the Battle of Fort Eben-Emael. Died under mysterious circumstances after openly criticizing Adolf Hitler's 'Commando Order.' Rare war-date S.P., 5.5 x 3.5 in., b/w, a chest-up seated pose in uniform, signed 'Koch' on the verso. Slightly creased with adhesive residue on the verso, else fine. The 'Commando Order', issued on October 18, 1942, called for the execution of all Allied commandos captured in Europe or North Africa. Koch, who was commanding forces in North Africa, refused to follow the order as it violated the laws of war. After suffering a head wound, he was sent back to Germany in order to convalesce. During this time, he was involved in a car accident and died from injuries sustained; many in his regiment believed it was not an accident, but a method of silencing Koch's outspoken criticism.
