QUIDO KOCIAN (1874–1928): GIRL WITH A HARP

    Est: -

/ After 1910 / Patinated plaster / Original label on underside: "Quido Kocián/Pravda/5.000 Kčs" / 40 cm Works by this excellent sculptor, who is considered one of the leading exponents of Czech art at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, are remarkable for their symbolic form and expressiveness with elements of Art Nouveau. In this subject, the girl coalesces with the musical instrument as if she herself were turning into music. Quido Roman Kocian, a student of Josef Václav Myslbek at the Academy of Fine Art in Prague, thematizes people's inner stirrings and the darker sides of human nature. During his travels he visited Italy and France, where he met Auguste Rodin. "The Death of Abel" is one of his major works.
